IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The data chart and table illustrates the value of country's export and the percentage change, respectively from 2015 to 2016. Overall, the value of export has increased in each field except gems and jewelery.

To commence with the table, petroleum products export has spiked by 3 percent from 2015 to 2016.However, export of the engineered goods has increased by 8.5 percent. Moreover, in the class of exporting, textile industry have experienced a vast rise in their exporting business. Whereas, agricultural products percentage change is nearly negligible. Ultimately, gems and jewelery is the only industry with the negative results.

By taking the chart into account, earning from the petroleum products has been increased by 2 billion dollars, followed by the engineered goods holding the second place in the earning chart. In contrast to this, gems and jewelley indusrty is in loss as compared to the last year. Finally, other two industries went through a optimistic rise in sales.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features from both the chart and the table. There is a clear overview stating that export values increased across categories except for gems and jewellery. Key features such as the top export (petroleum products) and the contraction in gems and jewellery are identified. However, some ideas are under-developed or lack full integration of data points, and the distinction between data from the chart versus the table is sometimes blurred, which keeps the response at this level. To move higher, the student should provide a more precise synthesis of the data, directly linking absolute values from the chart with percentage changes from the table.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a concluding discussion. Information is generally ordered logically, moving from an overview to specific category details. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty, relying on repetitive transitional phrases like 'To commence with' and 'Moreover' rather than smoother transitions. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, such as shifting abruptly between the table and chart data without maintaining a unified narrative. Paragraphing is present but could be structured more effectively to group related data points together.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common terms such as 'spiked', 'negligible', and 'optimistic rise'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes that prevent a higher score, such as 'jewelery' (misspelled), 'class of exporting', and 'gem and jewelley indusrty'. Collocations are sometimes unnatural, for instance, 'gems and jewelley indusrty is in loss'. To achieve a higher band, the student needs to demonstrate greater precision in word choice, correct spelling, and more natural collocations when describing statistical data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as introductory participial phrases ('By taking the chart into account') and comparative clauses. There are several errors in grammar and punctuation, including subject-verb agreement issues ('textile industry have experienced', 'agricultural products percentage change is'), missing articles ('value of country's export'), and incorrect prepositions inside grammatical patterns. Although these errors do not seriously impede communication, they occur regularly enough to restrict the score to this band. Incorporating a wider variety of error-free complex sentences and ensuring careful proofreading of basic agreements would improve this score.
