Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by providing an overview and selecting key features from both the bar chart and the table. It highlights the general trend that most sectors experienced an increase in earnings, with textiles growing the most and petroleum generating the highest absolute values. However, some parts of the response are slightly under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation—for instance, stating that engineered goods was the second most earner followed by petroleum products, when petroleum actually had the highest overall earnings. Additionally, the second paragraph mentions comparing 2015 with 2015 due to a slip. To reach a higher level, the selection and reporting of data need to be more precise throughout, ensuring that all comparisons between the categories are entirely accurate and clearly linked to the visual data.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs focusing on specific export categories. Paragraphing is used to separate different aspects of the visual data. However, cohesion is sometimes faulty or mechanical, and referencing is not always clear. For instance, transitional phrases like 'Focusing on the highest earnings' and 'Furthermore' are used, but some sentences feel disjointed, and pronouns such as 'which' or 'it' occasionally create ambiguous references. To achieve a higher score, the logical progression between sentences needs to be smoother, and cohesive devices should be used more flexibly without relying on repetitive transitional structures.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to data reporting, such as 'earnings', 'sectors', and 'percentage change'. However, there are notable lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices throughout the text, such as writing 'bar cahrt', 'Perticularly', 'earner' instead of 'earning sector', and confusing 'peteroleum' with 'petroleum'. Word form and spelling errors occasionally surface, though they do not seriously impede communication. To move to a higher band, the writer must demonstrate greater precision in word choice and collocation, eliminate spelling mistakes, and use a wider variety of less common vocabulary with better control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to handle comparative and numerical data structures. There are some error-free sentences, but several grammatical and punctuation errors persist. Examples include subject-verb agreement issues like 'every sectors had', awkward phrasing such as 'was reported for maximum increase', and minor preposition or article slips. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and these errors rarely impede communication, placing the response firmly at this level. To reach the next band, the student needs to demonstrate a greater variety of complex structures with higher accuracy, ensuring that verb forms, pluralisation, and prepositions within grammatical patterns are controlled more consistently.
