Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of the chart and table, and makes relevant comparisons between categories. The overview correctly identifies the general upward trend for most exports alongside the single exception of gems and jewellery. However, some ideas are under-developed or contain minor inaccuracies in data interpretation. For instance, the student states that petroleum products grew to approximately 65 billion when the visual data shows around 63 billion, and misreads the 2015 value for textiles as near 25 billion rather than 26 billion. Despite these slight misreadings, the key trends and comparative figures are sufficiently covered to meet the requirements of this band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and a clear structure with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs detailing the categories. Information and ideas are generally well sequenced, and the progression from petroleum and engineered goods to agricultural products, textiles, and gems and jewellery is logical. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, relying on repetitive transitional phrases such as 'To begin with' and 'Following this'. Referencing and logical connectors within sentences are occasionally awkward, such as starting the overview with 'Overall, all the categories have increased slightly in 2016 as compared to the value of the year 2015 while gems and jewellery are the only which was decreased', which disrupts the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'increment', 'significantly', and 'industries exports'. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word formation throughout the text. Examples include 'the benefit of a country's exports' instead of 'value', '60 billion dollar' instead of 'dollars', 'grow up' instead of 'grow', 'biilion' (spelling error), 'at the change of' instead of 'by a change of', and 'estimately' instead of 'estimated' or 'approximately'. While these lexical errors and occasional awkward word choices do not completely impede communication, they restrict the score to this band.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors in verb forms, prepositions, articles, and relative pronoun usage. Examples include 'percentage of change in distinct industries exports' (missing articles and awkward prepositional phrasing), 'gems and jewellery are the only which was decreased' (incorrect relative pronoun and tense agreement), 'it went up to just around 32 billion at the very low change' (article misuse), and 'textiles industry was the lowest one' (missing article). Despite these recurring errors in grammar and punctuation, the structures used do not severely impede communication.
