Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart compares the export earning of a country in several groups during 2015 and 2016. The table compares some variation in figures in the year 2015 and 2016.

Overall, All the products shows dominant variation except the one product which is gems and jewellery decreased the export earning 5.18%. The product category which shows highest export earning is the textiles that is 15.24%.

In the year 2015 all the product groups of a country shows lower percentage values than in 2016. However, the one category which is gem and jewellery shows dominant percentage. In 2016 the dominant percentage values are the 15.24 in textiles category of the country. The export of the engineer goods also increase as compared to the last year and it gives the 8.5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the task only partially, as some information is confused and inaccurately reported. While the student attempts to summarise the main features, there are significant misinterpretations of the data. For instance, stating that textiles showed the 'highest export earning' of 15.24% confuses earnings in billions with percentage change values, as 15.24% is the growth rate, not the total value in 2016 (which was 31.5 billion). Additionally, the overview section contains contradictory statements regarding whether products showed dominant variations or decreases. Ideas are limited and under-developed, and the failure to accurately distinguish between absolute values and percentage changes prevents the response from achieving a higher score.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

There is some organisation with an attempted introduction, body paragraphs, and an overall summary, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. Paragraphing is present, but internal cohesion is weak and repetitive. Phrases such as 'the one category which is gem and jewellery' and 'the dominant percentage values are the 15.24' cause mechanical and repetitive referencing. Cohesive devices are sometimes inaccurate or awkward, leading to a disjointed flow that requires the reader to work harder to follow the intended comparisons between 2015 and 2016 data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate to convey basic ideas about the charts, utilising terms such as 'export earning', 'product category', and 'percentage values'. However, there are noticeable word choice and form errors that occasionally cause confusion, such as writing 'export earning' instead of 'earnings', and 'faces declined' instead of 'faced a decline'. Attempts to use less common vocabulary are hindered by inaccuracies in collocation and phrasing, meaning the lexical range remains restricted and struggles to precisely handle economic data.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer employs a limited range of structures, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside a few attempts at complex forms that are frequently faulty. There are noticeable errors in subject-verb agreement and plurals, such as 'All the products shows' instead of 'show', and 'the engineer goods also increase' instead of 'increased'. Article usage is also inconsistent ('the gems and jewellery', 'the textiles'). These frequent errors persist throughout the text and can occasionally cause difficulty for the reader, keeping the control of grammar at a basic level.
