Student answer (Band 5.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by outlining the export earnings for five categories in 2015 and 2016 alongside the percentage changes. However, the performance is limited because the information is not always accurately reported, and there are significant confusions regarding the data. For instance, the student states that petroleum products accounted for 60 billion dollars and peaked to around 62 billion, whereas the chart shows 61 and 63 billion. More critically, the student confuses export figures with import figures in the conclusion, stating that petroleum and engineered products were among the 'highest import'. Furthermore, while an overview is attempted, key features are not fully highlighted or supported consistently, leading to an under-developed response that only partially satisfies the requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response features some basic organisation with a four-paragraph structure comprising an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression and logical flow between ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but grouping of information is somewhat random, and transitions between sentences are mechanical. Cohesive devices are used inadequately or repetitively, such as the repeated reliance on basic time markers and phrasing like 'in 2015' and 'in 2016'. Referencing is also occasionally unclear, contributing to an overall disjointed structure that fails to guide the reader smoothly through the comparative data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The lexical resource is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student uses a basic vocabulary range suitable for describing simple charts, such as 'income generated', 'proportion of rise or fall', and 'percentage'. However, there are noticeable errors in word choice and spelling throughout the text, including 'jwellery' instead of jewellery, 'increament' instead of increment, and 'Enginerring' instead of engineering. Furthermore, inappropriate vocabulary is employed, notably using the word 'import' multiple times instead of 'export' (e.g., 'Gems and jwellery decreased its import trend'). These lexical inaccuracies and spelling errors cause some difficulty and reduce the precision expected at higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer uses a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic subject-verb-object constructions. Attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty, such as in the opening overview sentence where coordination becomes unwieldy. There are frequent errors in grammar, including prepositions and article usage, such as 'accounted for the 60 billion dollars' and 'Textile was the least valued category'. Additionally, verb tense and agreement slips appear, for example, saying 'Textile has the most significant overall increase' when describing past data. These frequent errors cause occasional strain for the reader, though the core meaning remains partially accessible.
