Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
The response partially addresses the task by covering the main data points, but contains noticeable inaccuracies and generalisations. For instance, the student states that petroleum products and engineered goods illustrated earnings of '60$ billions', which inaccurately conflates the two separate categories and figures (61 and 57 billion in 2015, rising to 63 and 62). Furthermore, the overview lacks a fully clear summary of the overall trends, stating that the percentage change in textiles showed an increasing trend, which is a misapplication of percentage change data. While the response identifies the highest category and attempts to report some figures from the table, key comparisons are missed or imprecise, keeping the task response limited and under-developed in places.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response maintains a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical paragraph structure, moving from an introduction to an overview, followed by body paragraphs detailing the chart and the table. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical and referencing is occasionally unclear. For instance, the opening sentence of the second body paragraph relies on repetitive transitions ('To begin with, in 2015 and in 2016...'), and cohesive devices are used rather simplistically. Paragraphing is present and separates the introduction, overview, chart details, and table details adequately, fulfilling the requirements for a moderately organized text where progression is visible despite some rigid links.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, but the range is limited and contains noticeable errors that occasionally impede smooth communication. The student attempts less common vocabulary items such as 'proportion change' and 'respective', but misuses them, writing 'proportion change' instead of 'percentage change' and misspelling 'respectively' as 'respectivily'. Other lexical slips include spelling errors like 'higest', 'illustarted', 'dominent', 'remanined', and 'remaning'. Word choice is frequently basic or inaccurate, such as stating that earnings 'remained same at 42$ billions' when the actual figure was 43 billion falling to 41 billion, demonstrating that vocabulary limitations directly affect the precise reporting of data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response demonstrates a very limited range of structures, relying mostly on simple sentences with frequent attempts at complex forms that are often faulty. There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text. For example, starting sentences with coordinating conjunctions like 'And the table demonstrates...' violates standard academic style. Prepositional and structural errors are also present, such as 'percentage changes in values textiles' and 'through out the period'. Subject-verb agreement and tense usage show lapses, such as 'earnings... was 60$ billions' (plural subject with singular verb) and 'remanined same'. These frequent errors require the reader to decode the meaning, placing the grammatical control at a lower level.
