IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The chart exhibits fluctuating export earnings of a country in respect to worth of billions from the period of 2o15 to 2o16. For instance, petrolium was seen rising upto sixty billion whereas engineered giods were emerged as second highest growing export worth between fifty to sixty billion dollars.

In adition to this, the quantitative data records gems and jewellery at third spot with hike of forty billion. However, agricultural and textile reported as two lowest performing exports with worth between twenty billion and ten billion dollars respectively. The pattern in percentage format highlights textiles as top performer followed by engineered and gems. Whereas it similar as above showcases petrolium and agricultural as two lowest. The difference in context of years is not visible enough to differenciate and therefore can be safely rated as stangnat or slightly varied throughtout the stated years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify several relevant categories and recognise that textiles and engineered goods performed strongly in percentage terms. However, the response reports key figures inaccurately: petroleum is about $61–63 billion, not simply “sixty billion,” gems were around $43 billion in 2015 and fell to $41 billion, and agriculture and textiles were not the two lowest in the order you give. The overview that earnings were “stagnant or slightly varied” also misses the notable rise in textiles and the decline in gems. The response is under the required 150 words, and the limited, sometimes incorrect reporting means the task is addressed only minimally. Select the main increases and decrease, then support them with accurate comparisons across both years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has some basic organisation: it begins with petroleum and engineered goods, then moves to the remaining categories and percentage changes. Linking expressions such as “In addition to this,” “However,” and “Whereas” show an attempt to connect ideas. Nevertheless, there is no clear overall progression from an overview to well-organised details, and some links do not express the relationship accurately. For example, “Whereas it similar as above” is difficult to follow, while the final sentence combines the lack of visible difference with a conclusion of stagnation. Use a clear overview paragraph followed by grouped comparisons, and make each transition show a precise contrast or similarity.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “quantitative data,” “top performer,” and “percentage format.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing a chart: “hike of forty billion” does not clearly describe the gems figure, and “lowest performing exports” is imprecise when you mean the lowest earnings. Spelling errors such as “petrolium,” “giods,” “adition,” and “stangnat” are noticeable and reduce clarity. Some phrases, including “in respect to worth of billions,” are also awkward. Aim for precise chart language such as “rose to,” “declined to,” “export value,” and “recorded the largest percentage increase,” checking spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use both simple statements and some longer sentences with contrast, for example, “However, agricultural and textile reported…” and “The pattern in percentage format highlights… Whereas…”. This shows an attempt to vary sentence structure, but control is inconsistent. Several sentences omit necessary articles or verbs, as in “agricultural and textile reported,” and the clause beginning “Whereas it similar as above” is incomplete. The opening sentence also has an unclear grammatical construction (“in respect to worth of billions”). These errors sometimes make the intended relationships difficult to understand. Practise complete subject–verb structures and use straightforward comparative patterns, such as “Textile earnings rose from… to…, while gems fell from… to…”.
