IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The given charts elaborate the information about the earning of a country through exports, from variety of products and the change in the values of products in 2015 and 2016. The data is given in terms of billions and product category.

Overall, petroleum and engineered products accounted for the highest proportion in both years, whereas textiles made up lowest ratio while textiles show the excessive rise in the value change percentage. On the other hand, gems and jewellery values dropped.

The bar chart compares the export's earning of different products in billions. The petroleum and engineered products earned highest at 60 billion in both 2015 and 2016, whereas textiles earned least at 25 billion dollars in 2015 and shows steady growth in 2016 at 30. Gem and jewellery remains second most earned export product in 2015 and 2016 at 40 billions. The agricultural product's earning remains stable at 30 billion dollars in both years.

The table presents the percentage change in the value of different products in 2015 and 2016. The prices of textiles products increase excessively by 15.24%. On the other hand, the prices of gems and jewellery drops 5.18%. Engineered goods prices grow 8.5% while petroleum product's values rises by 3%. The prices of agricultural products increase only 0.81%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You cover both the bar chart and the percentage table, and your overview identifies the main contrasts: petroleum and engineered goods are the leading categories, while textiles show the strongest growth and gems and jewellery decline. Most reported figures are broadly consistent with the chart. However, some comparisons are inaccurate or unclear: petroleum and engineered goods did not both earn 60 billion in both years; their values were about 61 and 57 billion in 2015, rising to 63 and 62 billion in 2016. Textiles were the lowest category in 2015, but not in 2016, when they matched agriculture at about 31.5 billion. Develop the overview more precisely and distinguish the categories’ rankings from their percentage changes.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, then separate descriptions of the chart and table. This makes the information easy to follow, and linking phrases such as “Overall” and “On the other hand” help signal contrasts. However, the progression is sometimes weakened by repetition: the overview and chart paragraph both state that textiles were the lowest and that gems declined. Some connections are also imprecise, particularly “whereas textiles earned least … and shows steady growth,” which combines a comparison with a trend awkwardly. Group the main chart comparisons more efficiently, then use the table paragraph to focus on percentage changes, with clearer references to the relevant year or category.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “accounted for,” “percentage change,” “remains stable,” and “dropped,” so the main information is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the highest proportion” and “excessive rise,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing export values. For example, “prices” is used repeatedly where “export earnings” or “values” is intended, and “earned highest” needs a more natural expression such as “recorded the highest earnings.” “Excessively” suggests an undesirable or extreme increase rather than simply the largest rise. Aim for precise, consistent terms and avoid describing monetary values as proportions unless you are discussing shares.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a contrast clause in “whereas textiles made up lowest ratio” and a relative clause in “textiles show the excessive rise.” The overall meaning remains clear, but some grammatical errors recur. Articles and noun forms are missing or inconsistent in phrases such as “made up lowest ratio” and “at 40 billions”; subject–verb agreement is also uneven in “textiles … shows” and “the prices … drops.” Tense shifts occur when describing past data, for example “earned” followed by “shows.” Check agreement between subjects and verbs, use consistent past tense for the 2015–2016 figures, and review articles and singular/plural forms. These corrections would make the comparisons more controlled.
