IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The bar graph illustrates the revenue generation from export in different categories during 2015 and 2016. The graph suggests that export of most of the goods have been increased in 2016 except gems and jewellery.. Petroleum products has surprisingly high demand and still it is increasing.

Here, five different products are shown and compared within two years.

Petroleum product export was nearly 61 billion dollar in 2015 but a slight increase can be seen in year 2016, making it the highest revenue generating source of export goods. The engineered good demand was somewhere around 57 billion dollar in 2015 but a good hike can be seen with 8.5% in 2016. Gems and jewellery export has declined slightly by 5.18% in 2016 compared to 2015. Agricultural product has almost same export rate but a small hike of 0.81% can still be seen if we look at the data. Textile export was much lower in 2015 generating only around 26 billion dollar but a dramatic rise of 15.24% was experienced by 2016. Now it generates above 30 billion dollars economy.

To conclude, the graph suggested that the textile industry is growing fast than any other goods. Petroleum product still has good demand which generates the highest income through export.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You identify the main pattern accurately: most export categories rose, while gems and jewellery declined, and you note that petroleum remained the largest earner and textiles had the strongest growth. Several figures and percentage changes are reported correctly, including the 5.18% fall and the 15.24% rise. However, some comparisons are incomplete or imprecise: the engineered-goods increase is described as a “good hike” without its 2016 value, and the petroleum increase is not quantified. The statement that petroleum had “surprisingly high demand” also infers demand from export earnings, which the chart does not show. Your overview is relevant, but a clearer summary of the overall ranking and the contrast between the largest and smallest categories would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, moving from an introduction and overview to category details and a concluding summary. This gives the reader a basic route through the information. However, progression is not consistently smooth: “Here, five different products are shown and compared within two years” repeats information already given, while “To conclude” introduces a conclusion that largely restates the overview. The category details would be easier to follow if grouped more deliberately—for example, the higher-earning categories first, followed by the lower-earning ones. Some links, such as “but” and “if we look at the data,” feel mechanical or conversational. Use clearer comparisons between categories and avoid repeating the same overall point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “declined,” “slight increase,” “generating,” and “revenue,” and the meaning is generally clear. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data. “Surprisingly high demand” is not supported by the chart, which reports export values rather than demand, and “generates above 30 billion dollars economy” is unclear. There is also repetition of “export,” “goods,” and “product,” and some awkward combinations such as “revenue generation from export.” Aim for precise terms such as “export earnings,” “value,” and “rose to,” and use “category” or the specific product name to reduce repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses such as “but a slight increase can be seen” and a comparison using “compared to 2015.” Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Subject–verb agreement is inconsistent in “export of most of the goods have been increased” and “Petroleum products has,” while articles and number forms are also awkward in “Petroleum product export” and “61 billion dollar.” The phrase “Now it generates above 30 billion dollars economy” lacks a clear grammatical structure. Punctuation needs attention too: the overview ends with two full stops. Check agreement, singular/plural forms, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at varied structures.
