IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart illustrates the export earnings in billions in five different sectors (petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultureal products and textiles) in two years 2005 and 2006, whereas the table depicts the ratio deviation over the same category and years.

Overall, it can be seen that petroleum products was most popular category in both years, while export earnings was least by textiles. As regard of table, four categories demonstrated the rose in values, while gems and jewellery ratio dropped.

Country's earned significant by petroleum products in both years, around 60$ , engineered goods also popular business and earn, around 60$ in 2016 and almost 55$ in 2015. Moreover, gems & gewellery and agricultural products costs around 40$ and 30$, respecrively. In contrast, textiles earning was least in both years, around 30$ in 2005 and almost 20$ in 2015.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart’s subject and give a basic overview: petroleum products are highest, textiles are lowest, and gems and jewellery is the only category to decline. However, the response addresses the data only partially. The years are incorrectly given as 2005 and 2006 rather than 2015 and 2016, and the claim that textiles earned around $20 billion in 2015 is inaccurate; it was about $26 billion, rising to roughly $31.5 billion in 2016. You also omit the table’s percentage changes and leave the final paragraph unfinished. The response is five words below the required minimum. To develop the summary, report the key rises and the fall with accurate figures, and complete the comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable sequence: an introduction, an overview, and a paragraph describing some chart figures. This gives the reader a basic sense of the topic. However, progression is limited because the table is mentioned in the overview but not explained, and the final line, “On the other hand,” is left incomplete. Linking phrases such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “In contrast” are used, but some do not lead into a clear or relevant contrast. Paragraphing is present, yet the information is not organised into a complete account of both visuals. A clearer structure would be to introduce the chart and table, summarise the main trends, then compare the categories and report the percentage changes in a finished final paragraph.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “categories,” “ratio,” and “dropped,” so the general subject is understandable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, such as “most popular category” for the category with the highest earnings and “Country’s earned significant by petroleum products.” There are also spelling errors in “agricultureal,” “gewellery,” and “respecrively,” which reduce precision. “Ratio deviation” is not a natural description of the table; “percentage change” would be clearer. Aim for accurate, conventional chart language such as “recorded the highest earnings,” “rose by,” and “fell by,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt a few complex sentence forms, particularly the opening sentence with “whereas” and the overview beginning “Overall,”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships difficult to follow. For example, “petroleum products was most popular category” has problems with subject–verb agreement and article use, while “Country’s earned significant by petroleum products” is not a complete, well-formed clause. The phrase “As regard of table” also shows difficulty forming the intended grammatical pattern. Sentence structures are mostly simple or awkwardly joined, and the final fragment “On the other hand,” is incomplete. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, and complete clauses, then use a small range of complex structures with clear punctuation.
