Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You identify the chart’s subject and give an overview that petroleum products were the largest export category and textiles the smallest. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it reports very few figures and leaves out important comparisons, including the decline in gems and jewellery and the changes in agricultural products and textiles. Some figures are also inaccurate: petroleum exports rose from about $61 billion to $63 billion, not 64%, and the chart gives export values in billions of dollars, not percentages. The statement that engineered goods “grow by 8.5% in 2015” misrepresents the table, which shows an increase between 2015 and 2016. The response is also 36 words below the required minimum. Include a fuller overview and accurate comparisons across the categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an introduction is followed by an overview and then a detail paragraph. This gives the reader some sense of the intended structure. However, the response ends abruptly after the engineered-goods point, so there is no clear progression through the remaining data or a concluding comparison. Linking is limited, with “overall” and “there is also” doing most of the work, and the long opening sentence is difficult to follow because several categories are listed without clear punctuation. Develop a separate paragraph for the main figures and use clear comparisons such as “whereas” or “by contrast” to connect related trends.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “exports,” “categories,” “largest portion,” and “rising trend,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or repetitive. “Portion” is not the most natural term for export values, and “covered the largest portion of export” is awkward; “accounted for the highest export value” would be clearer. There are also spelling and word-form errors, such as “desribles,” “comparision,” and “Engineered good.” These do not make the whole response unintelligible, but they reduce precision and fluency. Use standard category names consistently and choose vocabulary that describes values and changes accurately.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response attempts a few longer sentence forms, including “it can be clearly seen that…” and “there is also rising trend…,” but control is uneven. Errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction occur frequently: “the table given describes” is not formed correctly, “Engineered good are” has a number-agreement problem, and “there is also rising trend” needs an article. The final sentence is incomplete, ending after “in 2015” without completing the comparison. Punctuation and capitalisation are also inconsistent, particularly at the start of sentences and around the category list. Aim first for complete, accurate sentences, then add a small range of comparison structures.
