IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart delineates value of one countary's export in five categories during 2015 and 2015, while the table illustrates fluctuation in the percentage in each category of export in 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, export earnings in two categories rose marginally in petroleum products, whereas engineered goods, textiles increased significantly. In contrast, gems and jewellery dipped slightly and agriculture products remained relatively stable.
Export petroleum products recorded the highest at just around 6 billion dollars in 2015 before reaching to around 63 billion dollars in 2016.
Engineered goods exports stood at the second highest around 57 billion dollars in 2015. Exports of this category rose significantly to 61 billion dollars in 2016.
Gems and jewellery registered at 42 billion in 2015: however, this figure dipped to around 41 billion in 2016.
Agriculture products remained relitively same in both year 2016 and 2015 at 30 billion dollars, while taxtile exports started at 25 billion dollars in 2015 and rose to 32 billion dollars in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You identify the main categories and give a useful overview of the broad trends: petroleum and engineered goods rose, gems and jewellery fell, and agriculture was stable. However, the overview is not fully accurate: textiles also rose substantially, but the phrase “two categories rose marginally” conflicts with the later claim that engineered goods and textiles increased significantly. Several figures are misreported: petroleum was about $61 billion in 2015, not $6 billion; engineered goods reached about $62 billion, not $61 billion; and agriculture was about $31–31.5 billion, rather than $30 billion. The table’s percentage changes are not reported, despite being a key part of the task. Covering both the chart and table more clearly, and selecting accurate comparisons, would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview, and separate paragraphs describing the categories. This makes the information generally easy to follow. The category-by-category sequence is sensible, and contrast markers such as “In contrast” and “while” help connect comparisons. However, the overview’s statement that two categories rose marginally does not align with the later description of significant increases, so progression is weakened by this inconsistency. Some links are also awkward, as in “Gems and jewellery registered at 42 billion in 2015: however,” where the punctuation and transition interrupt the sentence. Grouping the strongest increases together and explicitly comparing the table percentages would create a clearer, more cohesive account.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “recorded the highest,” “rose,” “dipped,” and “remained relatively stable.” These choices communicate the main movements, and some variation avoids repeating the same verb throughout. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “fluctuation in the percentage,” “registered at,” and “remained relatively same.” Spelling errors in “countary,” “relitively,” and “taxtile” also reduce accuracy. Use precise terms for the table, such as “percentage change,” and choose standard collocations like “stood at” or “increased by.” More accurate vocabulary would help distinguish small changes from the much larger rise in textiles.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple sentences and more complex structures, including the overview contrast and the final sentence using “while.” Most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors, however, affect clarity and accuracy. The introduction says “during 2015 and 2015,” and the phrase “before reaching to around 63 billion” has an incorrect verb pattern. In “Export petroleum products recorded the highest,” the sentence structure is incomplete or unclear, while “in both year 2016 and 2015” has number and word-order problems. Punctuation is also inconsistent in “42 billion in 2015: however.” Review articles, plural forms, verb patterns, and sentence boundaries, then proofread each sentence for a complete and accurate structure.
