Student answer (Band 5.5)

The given line chart illustrates information about the value of five different export catagories of a country in 2015 and 2016. And the table shows the percentage of each catagory changed in exports and comparing it in the given period of time.

Overall, it can be seen that all exports increased in the given time, expect gems and jewelry exports which declined. The high proportion of export witnessed in textile export and the percentage for the agricultural products were comparatively the same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify the main direction of change, noting that most categories rose while gems and jewellery declined, and you include several figures. However, the report only partially covers the chart: petroleum products and agricultural products receive almost no detailed comparison, and there is no clear account of the overall ranking, such as petroleum being the highest earner in both years. Some figures and descriptions are inaccurate: textiles rose from about 26 to 31.5 billion, not 25 to 32; engineered goods were about 57 and 62 billion, not 60 and 64; and gems fell from about 43 to 41 billion, rather than 39. The statement that gems’ earnings “dropped to 5.18%” confuses the percentage change with the export value. Select the key comparisons and report them precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, an overview and separate paragraphs for details. The overview also gives the reader a useful general direction before the figures. However, progression is limited because the final paragraph discusses only gems and jewellery, while petroleum and agricultural products are not integrated into the account. Some linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly “To begin begin with” and the repeated use of “Moreover” and “Furthermore.” The sentence beginning “And the table…” is also an awkward continuation of the introduction. Organise the details into clear comparisons—for example, the highest-value categories together and the lower-value categories together—and use linking phrases only where they clarify the relationship between points.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant task vocabulary, including “exports,” “percentage,” “declined” and “earnings,” so the topic is generally clear. There is some repetition of “export” and “earned,” however, and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate: “the high proportion of export witnessed in textile export” does not clearly express the intended comparison, while “dropped to 5.18%” misrepresents the table’s percentage change. Spelling errors such as “catagories” and “expect” also reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, precise language such as “export value,” “recorded the largest increase,” and “fell by 5.18%.” This would make the comparisons easier to understand and give the vocabulary more flexibility without relying on repeated wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including “Overall, it can be seen that…” and a sentence comparing values across two years. However, control is uneven, and errors occur often enough to make some statements difficult to follow. For example, “the percentage of each catagory changed in exports and comparing it” has an incomplete, awkward structure, while “by the of 2106” is missing a necessary word. There are also problems with sentence boundaries and capitalisation, such as beginning a sentence with “And” after the introduction and capitalising “The” after a comma. Practise forming complete comparison sentences with consistent past-tense verbs, for example, “Textile earnings rose from about $26 billion in 2015 to $31.5 billion in 2016.”
