IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The provided bar chart compares the annual export earnings of a country in different categories for the year 2015 and 2016. Meanwhile, the table illustrates the change between those categories in the unit of percentage.
Overall, petroleum products generated more revenue and textile generated less revenue in both years as compared to other products. Noticeably, each categories followed the same pattern with the exception of gems and jewellery items that earned more revenue in 2015 than 2016.
To start with, petroleum products brought a profit of just around 60 billions dollar in 2015 which increased by 3% in 2016, making a total of 65 billions. Revenue of engineered items was around 55 billions in 2015 that incremented by 8.5% to 62 billions in 2016.
Conversely, gems and jewellery products showed an opposite trend, earning approximately 43 billions in 2015 with a decline of 5.18% in 2016. Agriculture products brought a revenue of around 30 billions that increased by 0.81% in 2016. Textiles generated the least revenue in each year, contributing only 25 billions in the economy in 2015 which increased by 15.24% in 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the chart and table and identify the main pattern: petroleum products are the highest-earning category, while textiles rise most sharply, and gems and jewellery are the only category to decline. The comparisons are generally supported with figures, including the 5.18% fall in gems and jewellery and the 15.24% increase in textiles. However, the overview says textiles generated the least revenue in both years, which is not true in 2016: agricultural products and textiles are both about $31.5 billion. There is also a notable mismatch in petroleum earnings: the chart shows about $63 billion in 2016, not $65 billion. More precise reporting of these details would make the overview and supporting data more consistently accurate.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting the figures. The progression from the leading categories to the remaining categories is easy to follow, and transitions such as “To start with” and “Conversely” help signal the comparisons. The final paragraph groups the declining category with the lower-earning categories, which is a reasonable way to organise the information. Some linking is less natural or precise, however: “Meanwhile” does not clearly express the relationship between the chart and table, and “each categories followed the same pattern” is unclear. Use more exact references, such as “the table also reports percentage changes,” and make sure each transition reflects the relationship between the data.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “generated,” “decline,” and “increased,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “contributing … to the economy.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing chart data: “brought a profit” suggests business profit rather than export value, and “incremented” is not a natural verb in this context. “Textile” should be plural when referring to the category, while “in the unit of percentage” is an awkward way to describe the table. Aim for precise collocations such as “earned revenue,” “rose by,” and “percentage change”; this would improve flexibility and naturalness.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including relative and participial structures, and most sentences communicate the intended comparisons. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement, articles, and number forms. For example, “each categories followed” should be “each category followed,” and “textile generated less revenue” needs a plural category name or a suitable article. In “60 billions dollar,” both the number expression and noun form need correction; write “$60 billion.” The phrase “in 2015 that increased” also needs clearer clause structure, such as “in 2015, and this rose in 2016.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but more consistent control would be needed for a higher level.
