IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The bar graph illustrates the export earnings of a nation in various categories – petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and textiles – between 2015 and 2016. The data table demonstrates the proportional change in values.
Overall, although the revenue export had increased, export category gems and jewellery recorded a decline. However, textiles category showed particularly a considerable growth and agricultural products remained almost unchanged.
In 2015, export revenue from petroleum products stood at around 61 billion, engineered goods at 58 billion, gems and jewellery at 43 billion, agricultural products at 31 billion, and textiles at 25 billion. In 2016, all the products showed a consistent growth, while gems and jewellery export dropped to approximately 40.5 billion. Textiles accounted for the highest increase at around 31%. Other products petroleum reached nearly 62.5%, engineered goods 61%, and agricultural products remained almost stable at 31.5%.
According to percentage change in values, textiles revenue increased by 15.24% which was the highest among all categories, while gems and jewellery revenue declined by 5.18%. Petroleum products recorded growth by 3%, engineered goods at 8.5% and agricultural products increased only 0.81%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
You identify the main pattern: most categories rose, gems and jewellery fell, and textiles had the strongest percentage growth while agriculture was nearly stable. The overview is relevant, and you include figures from both years and the percentage table. However, some details are inaccurate or unclear: the 2016 values for petroleum and engineered goods are about $63bn and $62bn, not “62.5%” and “61%” (these are earnings, not percentages), and textiles rose from about $26bn to $31.5bn rather than “around 31%.” The phrase “all the products showed a consistent growth” also conflicts with the decline in gems and jewellery. More precise reporting of the chart values and a clearer distinction between earnings and percentage changes would make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, a paragraph describing the chart values, and a final paragraph reporting percentage changes. This makes the information easy to locate, and transitions such as “Overall,” “In 2016,” and “According to” help signal the stages of the summary. However, the progression is not always smooth because the chart figures and percentage changes are partly repeated, while the 2016 figures are mixed with percentage language in the same paragraph. The contrast between “all the products showed a consistent growth” and the subsequent fall in gems and jewellery also weakens the connection between ideas. Grouping the main comparisons more consistently and using clearer references would improve cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “proportional change,” “decline,” “remained almost unchanged,” and “recorded growth.” These choices allow you to describe both trends and comparisons, and the meaning is generally clear. Some collocations and word choices are less natural or imprecise: “revenue export had increased” is awkward, “textiles category showed particularly a considerable growth” is cumbersome, and “Other products petroleum reached” is difficult to interpret. Also, “31%” is used where the sentence appears to refer to a value of about $31.5 billion, so the wording confuses units. More precise expressions such as “export earnings rose to” and “the value reached approximately $31.5 billion” would strengthen control and clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including the concessive clause “although the revenue export had increased” and the comparison introduced by “while.” Most sentences remain understandable, and punctuation generally supports the paragraph structure. Some grammatical errors and awkward constructions remain. For example, “export category gems and jewellery” needs a clearer noun phrase, while “textiles category showed particularly a considerable growth” has an awkward placement of the adverb and article. In “Other products petroleum reached nearly 62.5%, engineered goods 61%,” the sentence structure is incomplete and the figures lack a clear grammatical link to the categories. Revising these sentences into complete, parallel clauses would improve accuracy while preserving the range of structures you already attempt.
