The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar graph represents the value of one nations trades in different categories between 2015 and 2016 whereas, the table graph illustrates the rate change in every category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Overall, it can be noticed that, there were 5 types of products export, which were petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products and textiles.

To begin with, in the year of 2015 and 2016, the highest petroleum products trade, which was 3% increase and earned $60 billions. However, the lowest textiles export, which was 15.25% rise to trade $25 billions.

On the other hand, the gems and jewellery were only products to decreased value, which was 5.18% down fall and earned $40 billions. Consequently, the textiles export earnings was low but the value of taxtile was the highest compared to the other. In addition, the agricultural products earning $30 billions in 2016 and 2015, the number of earning was same in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the five export categories and report several relevant trends, including petroleum as the leading category and gems and jewellery as the only one to decline. However, the response only partially summarises the chart: it gives little clear comparison across both years and omits the substantial rise in engineered goods. Some figures and descriptions are inaccurate or unclear: petroleum earnings were about $61 billion in 2015 and $63 billion in 2016, not simply “earned $60 billions”; textiles rose to about $31.5 billion, rather than $25 billion; and agricultural earnings increased slightly rather than staying exactly the same. The overview mainly lists categories instead of highlighting the key overall patterns. Select the main comparisons and report them accurately and clearly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure, moving from an introduction and overview to details, and phrases such as “To begin with,” “On the other hand,” and “In addition” show an attempt to connect ideas. However, progression is not consistently clear: the overview lists the categories rather than summarising the main trends, and the details shift between categories without a clear comparison of 2015 and 2016. The sentence beginning “Consequently” is difficult to follow because the relationship between textiles being low and having the highest value is not explained. Some linking phrases are also used mechanically or do not accurately signal the relationship between points. Group the categories by trend or value, and use clear comparisons to guide the reader through the data.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “exports,” “categories,” “increase,” “decreased value,” and “earnings,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, which sometimes makes the meaning unclear. For example, “table graph” is not a natural description, “one nations trades” is imprecise, and “the highest petroleum products trade” does not clearly express that petroleum had the highest export value. There are also spelling errors such as “taxtile,” alongside awkward phrases such as “5.18% down fall.” Aim for precise chart language such as “export value,” “rose by,” and “recorded the largest increase,” and check spelling and word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “whereas” and “which,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in sentence construction and agreement occur frequently enough to make some statements difficult to interpret. For instance, “the highest petroleum products trade, which was 3% increase and earned $60 billions” lacks a clear grammatical structure, while “the gems and jewellery were only products to decreased value” has an incorrect verb form and article use. The opening sentence also has awkward punctuation around “whereas.” Practise building clear subject–verb sentences first, then add subordinate clauses only when their relationship to the main idea is clear. Check articles, verb forms, singular/plural agreement, and punctuation.
