IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

In my opinion, this country focused on exporting petroleum products and also engineered goods , we can deduce from the charts that the whole economy of this country is based on this two exports. In addition, we can see that the country exports an amount of gems and jewellery and also agriculture products and we shouldn't forget about the textiles.

Furthermore, we notice that this country can't produce goods and products by itself and it concentrate on the exportation which by time is going to lead to a big economic issues.

Next, we can clearly see that the values of petroleum products increased on 2016 and it cross 60 billion dollars which is a huge number, however there's also a big difference between the engineered goods values on 2015 and 2016 , while the value of the gems and jewellery decreased by 2 billion in a year , at the same time I see tyat the value of the agriculture products almost stayed the same, which lead us to the textile and what an increasing, it increased by 15 percent.

Finally, I would say that this country neesd to find a quick solutions to fix this big economical problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several genuine trends, including petroleum exports rising above $60 billion, gems and jewellery falling by about $2 billion, agriculture remaining almost unchanged, and textiles increasing markedly. However, the response only partially fulfils the task because it does not provide a clear, neutral overview of the main comparisons. The claims that the economy is “based on” two exports and that the country cannot produce goods itself are not supported by the chart; the recommendation to fix an “economic problem” is also outside the information shown. Some comparisons are vague: engineered goods rose from about $57 billion to $62 billion, but calling this simply a “big difference” does not explain the change. Focus on summarising the data rather than inferring causes or offering advice.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable sequence, with linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “Next,” and “Finally,” and it moves through several product categories. However, these transitions do not create a clear progression from an overview to organised comparisons. The opening mixes a data claim with an unsupported conclusion about the economy, while the second paragraph shifts to speculation about production and future problems. The final paragraph returns to figures before ending with another recommendation. Grouping the categories by trend—for example, the highest-value exports, the declines, and the smaller changes—would make the information easier to follow. Avoid using a new transition for nearly every sentence; clearer paragraph purposes and more precise references would improve cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “exports,” “increased,” “decreased,” and “stayed the same,” so the main trends are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several choices are imprecise or unsuitable for a factual chart summary. “Focused on exporting” and “based on this two exports” overstate what the figures show, while “what an increasing” is not a natural way to describe a rise. There are also noticeable spelling and word-form errors, such as “tyat,” “neesd,” and “economical problem,” which reduce accuracy. Aim for concise, data-focused expressions such as “export earnings,” “recorded a rise,” and “remained broadly stable,” and check spelling before submitting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt some longer sentences using connectors such as “while” and “at the same time,” but complex sentences are often difficult to control. For example, “while the value of the gems and jewellery decreased by 2 billion in a year, at the same time I see…” combines clauses awkwardly and shifts into personal commentary. There are also recurring errors in agreement and sentence construction, as in “this two exports,” “it concentrate,” and “which lead us.” Punctuation is inconsistent, with spaces before commas and several ideas joined into long sentences. Practise writing shorter, complete comparisons with accurate subject–verb agreement and consistent past-tense reporting, such as “Textile earnings rose, while agricultural earnings changed very little.”
