Student answer (Band 4.5)

The bar chart illustrates the importance of one country`s shipments in various categories between 2015 and 2016. Whereas, the table illustrates the ratio change in each category of exports in 2016 equated with 2016.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You identify the chart’s subject and mention several relevant features, including petroleum earnings, the similar 2016 figures for agriculture and textiles, and the largest percentage change for textiles. However, the response is incomplete and the overview is unclear: it does not accurately summarise the main pattern across all categories, and the comparison that textiles “was droped 25$” is incorrect because textiles rose from about $26 billion to $31.5 billion. The table is also described as comparing 2016 with 2016, rather than 2015 with 2016. The final sentence breaks off after “engineeres,” leaving key information unfinished. The response contains 104 words, below the required 150, so the task is only minimally addressed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0

There is an attempt to organise the response into an opening, an overview paragraph and a further paragraph about percentage changes. This gives the reader some indication of how the information is being presented. However, the progression is difficult to follow because the overview mixes figures and comparisons without a clear organising principle, and the final paragraph ends mid-sentence. Linking words such as “Whereas,” “By contrast,” and “Similarly” are used, but some do not express a clear relationship between the ideas that follow. For example, “Similarly, the product category during 2015 and 2016” does not introduce a complete or specific point. Use a concise overview, then group the detailed comparisons logically, and ensure each sentence is complete.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant task vocabulary, including “bar chart,” “exports,” “categories,” “percentage,” and “petroleum products,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, making parts difficult to understand. “Importance of one country’s shipments” is not a natural way to describe export values, while “ratio change” and “equated with” do not accurately express the table’s percentage comparison. There are also spelling and word-form problems, such as “droped,” “engineeres,” and “minimize.” Aim for precise chart language such as “export earnings,” “increased by,” and “recorded the smallest rise.” Avoid evaluative phrases such as “not very good,” which are unsuitable for neutral data reporting.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response attempts some complex sentence forms, particularly with “Whereas” and “By contrast,” and several basic clauses communicate individual figures. However, the range is limited, and errors in sentence construction and punctuation frequently make relationships unclear. The opening uses “Whereas” after a full stop, leaving a dependent clause fragment, and “the table illustrates … equated with 2016” is not a complete, well-formed comparison. In “the textiles was droped,” the subject and verb do not agree, and the sentence structure does not clearly express the intended change. The final clause, “While, the petroleum products 3% and engineeres,” is incomplete. Practise writing complete sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement, clause boundaries and punctuation.
