IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The bar chart depicts value of a country's exports in different categories in 2015 and 2016 and the table provides data of the proportion modify in every category of exports in 2016 comparison by 2015.

Overall it is evident that a significant change was showed in texttile and tge lowest change in agriculture products.

After analysing the graphs, it can be seen clearly that the each category shows a significant proportion in both years. In 2015 petroleum products was approximately 61 billions but in next year it was escalated by almost 2 billions. In contrast, engineering goods was about 55 but the next year it was same as petrolium. A start declined showed in gems and jewellery and in 2016 it decreases almost 1 billion.

Further, the bar chart represent a negligible difference between agriculture products . In last category, textile was change only 15.24%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You identify the chart and table and include a relevant overview, noting that textiles had the largest change and agricultural products the smallest. However, the overview is unclear, and the report covers the data only partially: it omits the actual percentage changes for most categories and gives little comparison across the full set. Some figures are inaccurate: engineered goods rose from about $57 billion to $62 billion, not from $55 billion, and gems and jewellery fell by about $2 billion, rather than $1 billion. The textile figure is mentioned without explaining that its value rose from about $26 billion to $31.5 billion. The response is also six words below the required minimum. Add a clearer overview and report the main values and trends accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic paragraph structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs describing details. This gives the reader some organisation, and phrases such as “Overall” and “In contrast” signal relationships between points. However, progression is limited because the details are not grouped or compared consistently, and the final paragraph ends abruptly with the textile percentage rather than explaining the change in value. Some linking is awkward or unclear, as in “Further, the bar chart represent a negligible difference between agriculture products.” Develop a more logical sequence—for example, compare the higher-value categories first, then the lower-value ones—and use clear transitions to connect each comparison. A concluding overview is not necessary, but the existing overview should be precise and supported by the details.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of task-related vocabulary, including “depicts,” “proportion,” “escalated,” and “negligible,” and the reader can generally identify the categories being discussed. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for describing chart data: “proportion modify” does not express percentage change, “a significant proportion” is not the same as a high export value, and “a start declined” is unclear. There are also spelling errors in “texttile,” “tge,” and “petrolium,” alongside inconsistent category naming such as “engineering goods” for “engineered goods.” Use precise, conventional terms such as “export value,” “increased,” “fell,” and “percentage change.” This would make the limited but relevant vocabulary more accurate and easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You use some simple sentences and attempt longer structures, including “Overall it is evident that…” and “In contrast…,” but control is inconsistent. Errors in articles, agreement, tense, and sentence construction occur frequently enough to make several statements difficult to interpret. For example, “the each category shows” has an unnecessary article, while “petroleum products was” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence “In last category, textile was change only 15.24%” has an incorrect verb form and does not clearly state what changed. Punctuation also needs attention: there is no space after the full stop in “billions. In contrast.” Practise accurate past-tense reporting and build clear sentences around a subject, verb, and comparison.
