Student answer (Band 6.0)

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You cover all five categories and include an overview identifying petroleum as the leading export and gems and jewellery as the only category to decline. You also report the main direction of change and several relevant figures. This meets the task well, with some features more fully handled than others. However, the overview says textiles was the lowest in 2015 but does not clearly identify its strong rise as the largest percentage increase; that comparison appears only later. Some figures are inaccurate: engineered goods are about $57 billion in 2015, not $55 billion, and the increase is about $5 billion rather than seven; agricultural exports are about $31.5 billion in 2016, not $32 billion. More precise selection and checking of comparisons would strengthen the report.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs grouping the export categories. This makes the information generally easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “In contrast,” “In addition,” and “Moreover” help signal comparisons. However, the progression is sometimes mechanical, with several transitions added one after another rather than showing a precise relationship between points. Some sentences also combine multiple figures and comparisons in a way that makes the connection less clear, such as the petroleum sentence linking the 2015 and 2016 values to the percentage increase. Use fewer, more purposeful connectors and organise each category’s figures and change in a consistent pattern. Clearer referencing would also help the overview connect to the detailed paragraphs.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of task vocabulary, including “exports,” “percentage change,” “declined,” “increment,” and “contribution,” so the reader can understand the main subject and trends. There are also attempts to vary wording rather than repeat “increased.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, including “accounted highest proportion,” “rose with 7 points,” and “evaluated at 15.24% change.” Spelling errors such as “textlies,” “evulated,” and “wend” are noticeable, and “proportion” is not the most precise term for monetary export values. Aim for standard chart-reporting phrases such as “recorded the highest value,” “rose by,” and “increased by.” More accurate collocation and spelling would make your vocabulary more effective and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including contrast clauses and sentences with figures joined by commas. The overall meaning is usually recoverable, but grammatical control is uneven, and some complex sentences are faulty. For example, “Engineered goods was just $55 billions in 2015, it rose…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma; “the textiles was lowest” has subject–verb agreement problems; and “it kept declined” uses an incorrect verb form. Articles, plurals, and sentence boundaries also need attention, as in “$61 billions” and “In 2015, the proportion …, it kept declined.” Build accuracy with shorter, complete sentences, then practise combining them using conjunctions such as “while” or “whereas.” Check agreement and verb forms during revision.
