IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given diagram compares the vlaue of a country's exports in different categories during 2015 and 2016 whereas the provided table shows the percentage difference in the given categories of exports in 2015 and 2016.
Overall, the petroleum products were the highest markers in both of the years and textiles being the lowest among all. The lowest percentage increment was recorded for agricultural products whereas the highest percentage increment recorded for textiles.
If we look at the chart, petroleum products lead with around $60 billion for both the years whereas textiles was recorded at the lowest with around $25 billion in 2015 and around $30 billion in 2016. Engineered goods were the second highest in exports for both the years recorded for about $55 billion in 2015 and just above $60 billion in 2016. Gems and jewellery were in the middle with both years around the $40 billion mark and at last, agricultural products were recorded both around $30 billion placing them in the second last of category in terms of earnings.
The table shows that the most increment in percentage was recorded for textiles (15.24%) and the lowest increment was recorded at 0.81% for agricultural products. There was a decrement in values for gems and jewellery at 5.18%. And finally, engineered goods and petroleum products values were increased respectively 8.5% and 3% between the 2 years ([redacted phone]).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
You cover both the chart and the table, and your overview identifies several key features: petroleum products lead in both years, textiles show the largest percentage rise, and agricultural products the smallest. Most figures and trends are accurately reported, including the decline in gems and jewellery and the approximate earnings for textiles and engineered goods. This gives the response a clear, relevant account of the main information. To make the overview more complete and precise, note that textiles were not the lowest export category in 2016: agricultural products and textiles were both about $31.5 billion, while gems and jewellery fell to about $41 billion. Also, describe petroleum products as the highest category rather than “highest markers,” and make the comparison between the two years more explicit across categories.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear four-paragraph structure: introduction, overview, chart details, and table details. Information generally progresses logically, and phrases such as “Overall,” “If we look at the chart,” and “The table shows” help signal the stages of the report. The reader can follow the comparisons without difficulty. However, some linking is mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “recorded,” and the chart paragraph moves through categories in a somewhat list-like way. The phrase “and at last” also makes the sequence sound less natural. Grouping the categories by similar trends—for example, those that rose versus the category that declined—would create smoother progression and more flexible cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a reasonable range of task-related vocabulary, including “percentage increment,” “decrement,” “lead,” and “exports,” so the main comparisons are understandable. However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural for formal data reporting. “Highest markers” does not describe export values, and “textiles was recorded at the lowest” is an awkward construction. “Increment” and “decrement” are repeated where “increase” and “decrease” would sound more natural. There is also a spelling error in “vlaue.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for standard chart-reporting collocations such as “stood at,” “rose by,” “declined,” and “the highest-earning category.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including the opening comparison with “whereas” and the longer sentence describing several categories. Most meanings remain clear, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “textiles was recorded” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “the highest percentage increment recorded for textiles” is missing a verb. In “Engineered goods and petroleum products values were increased,” the noun phrase and passive construction are not formed correctly; use “the values for engineered goods and petroleum products increased.” Some article and sentence-boundary choices also need attention, as in “placing them in the second last of category.” More consistent control of agreement and complete clause structure would improve accuracy.
