IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
The given bar chart compares the earnings made through exports of five different categories in one particular country between 2015 and 2016, while the table shows the proportion of changes.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the exports of textile products was increased significantly and the exports of petroleum, agriculture, textile and engineered goods were increased slightly. While gems and jewellery exportation was decreased in 2016.
In 2015, petroleum products ranked first in exported items, which was accounted for more than 60$ billions, this figure was increased 3% and reached at nearly 63$ billions in 2016. Engineered goods were the second highest products, the figure was around 57$ billions in 2015 then it increased by 8.5% and made up about 62$ billions.
In terms of least exported categories, gems and jewellery recorded at more than 40$ billions in 2015 before declining at 40$ billions in 2016, this fall was recorded at 5.18%. While the amount of agricultural products was accounted at around 31$ billions in 2015 then increased by 0.81% and reached at 32$ billions in 2016. Textile industry was the least famous category among all the sectors which was recorded at around 26$ billions in 2015 then it increased significantly by 15.24% and reached at more than 30$ billions.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You cover the main categories and give a clear overview of the broad pattern: petroleum and engineered goods were the highest earners, while textiles showed the strongest growth and gems and jewellery declined. Most figures and percentage changes are accurately reported, including the 3% rise in petroleum and the 15.24% increase in textiles. The overview does, however, say that petroleum, agriculture, textiles and engineered goods increased “slightly,” which understates the textile rise; it also repeats textiles in that list. The description of textiles as the “least famous” category is not supported by the chart, which shows export value rather than popularity. For a stronger response, make the overview more precise and distinguish the smallest starting value from the largest percentage increase.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response is organised in a clear sequence: an introduction, an overview, and two detail paragraphs that compare the higher- and lower-value categories. This gives the reader a logical route through the information, and linking phrases such as “Overall,” “In 2015,” and “In terms of” help signal the stages of the report. Some connections are less smooth, particularly the sentence beginning “While gems and jewellery exportation…” which is a fragment rather than a complete contrast. The final paragraph also groups three categories together without a fully consistent comparison, and “textile” is repeated in the overview. Use complete contrast clauses and organise the details around clear comparisons, such as the largest values first and the remaining categories second.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a reasonably varied range of task-related vocabulary, including “ranked first,” “declining,” “recorded,” and “increased significantly,” and the meaning is generally clear. There is also some attempt to use more formal reporting language. However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural for describing chart data: “proportion of changes” would be better expressed as “percentage changes,” “exportation” is awkward here, and “least famous” incorrectly suggests popularity rather than export value. Phrases such as “made up about 62$ billions” and “more than 60$ billions” also show limited control of collocation and number formatting. More precise chart language and natural combinations would make the report more flexible and accurate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons with “while” and clauses introduced by “before,” so there is some structural variety. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to limit accuracy. For example, “the exports of textile products was increased” has an agreement and passive-form problem; “the figure was increased 3%” needs a different verb pattern; and “which was accounted for” is not correctly formed in “which was accounted for more than 60$ billions.” The sentence beginning “While gems and jewellery…” is also incomplete. Practise accurate past-tense reporting and complete clause structures, while checking subject–verb agreement and punctuation.
