IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart compares the value of a individual country's export in different categories such as petroleum products, engineered goods, gems, jewellery, agricultural products and textiles in 2015 and 2016. The table compares the proportion change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Overall, the export earnings of petroleum products and engineered goods accounted for the highest compared to other types , while textiles and agricultural products remained at the lowest level. Textile percentage experienced the dramatic increase in the given time frame, while the least change occurred in agricultural products.
The export earnings of petroleum products were just over 60 billion dollars in both years, whereas textiles and agricultural products were just over 30 billion dollars in both years except textiles which was under 30 billion in 2015. The earnings of engineered goods in 2015 was around 58 billion dollars and until 206 it was over 60 billion dollars, whole gems and jewellery stood at over 40 billion.
Textiles was accounted for the most significant growth and had 15.24%, while agriculture products had the lowest growth and had 0.81%. Petroleum products and engineered groups rose by 3% and 8.5% respectively, whereas gems and jewellery was the only one to experienced decline and had 5.18%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You cover both the chart and the table, and your overview identifies the leading export categories and the strongest and weakest percentage changes. The main comparisons are generally accurate: petroleum was just above $60 billion, textiles rose from below $30 billion to around $31.5 billion, and gems and jewellery was the only category to decline. This meets the task well, with some features more fully reported than others. However, the overview’s claim that textiles and agriculture were both at the lowest level is imprecise: textiles was the lowest in 2015, but agriculture and textiles were approximately level in 2016. The gems figure is also left vague, and its fall from about $43 billion to $41 billion is not clearly described. More precise comparisons would strengthen the report.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, an overview, and two paragraphs presenting chart and table details. This makes the information easy to follow, and contrasts such as “whereas” help connect comparisons. However, some linking and reference choices are awkward or unclear. In “while textiles and agricultural products remained at the lowest level,” the comparison is not sufficiently precise, and “whole gems and jewellery” makes the relationship between the figures difficult to follow. The final paragraph also repeats the table’s main points without linking them back to the chart values. Use clearer transitions and organise each detail paragraph around related comparisons—for example, the highest-earning categories together, followed by the lower-earning categories and their changes.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a suitable range of task-related vocabulary, including “export earnings,” “accounted for,” “dramatic increase,” and “decline.” These choices communicate the main trends, and the response uses several alternatives to simple words such as “rise.” Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, however: “proportion change” is not the natural term for the table’s figures, “textile percentage” is unclear, and “engineered groups” does not accurately name the category. “Remained at the lowest level” also overstates the comparison. Aim for precise category labels and standard chart language, such as “percentage change,” “textiles’ value,” and “export category.” This would make the report more natural and exact.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including comparisons with “whereas” and “while,” and most of the intended meaning remains understandable. Some grammatical errors nevertheless recur. For example, “a individual country's export” has an article and number problem, while “The earnings … was” has subject–verb disagreement. In “Textiles was accounted for,” the passive construction is not formed correctly, and “was the only one to experienced decline” uses the wrong verb form. There is also a tense/typing error in “until 206.” Check agreement, articles, and verb patterns when proofreading, and keep past-tense reporting consistent. More accurate control of these structures would make your comparisons clearer.
