IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The given table illustrates that the value of several categories of exports in a country. However, we can see the difference of percentage between 2015 till 2016.

Overall, in 2016 the percentage of petroleum products is higher than in 2015; moreover, textiles are at bottom to the given list. So following two catagroies give an increasing trend in the later year. And the perivous year gave the decreasig trend.

Moreover, as the petroleum products are at highest followed by the endineered goods and gems and jewellery in the middle, while the agriculture products at 2nd last position followed by tectiles which are at the bottom.

However, in 2016 the number of country exports are higher than previous year and engineered goods also follow the same trend but there is a change in the trend of gems and jewellery there exports decreased as compare to last year. And agricltural exports shows a slighter increasing trend as so tertiles.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You identify several relevant features, including petroleum products as the largest export category, gems and jewellery declining, and agricultural products changing only slightly. However, the overview is unclear and contains a key misreading: textiles were not at the bottom in 2016, as their value rose to about $31.5 billion, matching agricultural products and exceeding their 2015 value. The statement that “the previous year gave the decreasing trend” is also unsupported, since most categories increased from 2015 to 2016. The response does not clearly summarise the main overall pattern or accurately compare the categories’ values and percentage changes. To improve, give a concise overview of the general increases and the one decline, then support it with selected figures from both years.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has some paragraphing and attempts to guide the reader with phrases such as “Overall,” “Moreover,” and “However.” Nevertheless, the ideas do not progress clearly: the second paragraph discusses rankings and trends together, and the following paragraph repeats some of these points without a clear sequence. Connections such as “So following two categories” and “And the previous year” are difficult to interpret, while “However” does not introduce a clear contrast in its final use. Organise the report into a brief introduction, an overview, and a body that compares the higher-value categories before the lower ones. Use linking words only when their relationship between ideas is clear.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-relevant vocabulary, including “exports,” “percentage,” “decreased,” and “increasing trend,” so the topic is generally recognisable. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations make the meaning unclear, such as “percentage of petroleum products,” “at bottom,” and “number of country exports.” There are also noticeable spelling errors, including “catagroies,” “perivous,” “endineered,” and “tectiles,” which reduce clarity. Aim for precise chart language and check spelling carefully. For example, describe export values as “earnings” or “figures,” and use “ranked lowest” rather than “at bottom.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentences, including a comparison introduced by “while” and a sentence describing the decline in gems and jewellery. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to make some sentences difficult to follow. For example, “The given table illustrates that the value of several categories of exports” is incomplete because it lacks a main clause after “that,” while “there exports decreased” has an unclear subject and incorrect sentence structure. There are also problems with articles, agreement, and punctuation, as in “the agriculture products” and the run-together “year.And.” Build shorter, complete sentences first, then practise combining them accurately with “while” and “whereas.”
