The chart below shows the value of one country’s exports in various categories during 2015 and 2016. The table shows the percentage change in each category of exports in 2016 compared with 2015.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The bar chart illustrates the values in various categories such as petroleum products, engineered goods, gems and jewellery, agricultural products, and textiles of a country's exports. And the table compares the difference in change in values during 2015 and 2016.
Petroleum products earn the highest value of a country. Second highest value is the engineered goods. Textiles export was the lowest earn of a country. The only category that decreased in change in values in 2016 compared with 2015 is gems and jewellery while other catogories were increased. Textiles was increased in high percentage. Agricultural products didn't show much increase.
Petroleum products and engineered goods have earned more than $60 billion in 2016. Agricultural products and textiles were in equal export earnings more than $30 billion in 2016. While gems and jewellery is at the middle range of $40 billion during 2015 and 2016.
The catogories such as petroleum products, engineered goods, agricultural products, textiles were increased in change in values. Gems and jewellery decreased by 5.18%. Petroleum increased by 3%, engineered goods by 8.5%, agricultural products with lowest increase of 0.81%, and textiles with highest increase of 15.24%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You identify the main pattern accurately: petroleum products and engineered goods are the top earners, textiles has the strongest percentage rise, and gems and jewellery is the only category to fall. The figures you give for the percentage changes match the table, and you include useful comparisons such as the two categories exceeding $60 billion in 2016. This covers the task well, with some features reported more fully than others. However, the overview could be clearer and more precise: textiles was the lowest earner in 2015, but not in 2016, when it matched agricultural products at about $31.5 billion. Also, gems and jewellery was around $43 billion in 2015 and $41 billion in 2016, rather than remaining at $40 billion in both years. Clarifying these details would make the summary more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, a paragraph highlighting broad trends, and further paragraphs giving comparisons and percentage changes. This helps the reader locate the main information. However, progression is not consistently smooth because several points are repeated: the rise in textiles and the fall in gems and jewellery appear in more than one paragraph. Some links are also awkward or unclear, particularly the opening “And the table” and the sentence beginning “While gems and jewellery”. Grouping the main overview together, then comparing the chart values by high and lower earners, would create a clearer sequence. Use linking expressions selectively and make sure each paragraph adds a distinct aspect of the comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “export earnings”, “percentage”, “increased” and “decreased”, and the category names are generally handled clearly. The range is nevertheless limited, with repeated use of “value”, “increased” and “category”, and some word choices or collocations are unnatural, such as “the lowest earn of a country” and “increased in high percentage”. There are also spelling errors in “catogories”. These do not prevent the reader from understanding the main trends, but they reduce precision and fluency. Aim to use a wider set of accurate reporting phrases, for example “recorded the lowest earnings”, “rose substantially” and “showed a marginal increase”, while checking spelling and avoiding repeated wording.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
Your sentences communicate the main comparisons, and you attempt some variation, including a contrast with “while” and a relative clause in “the only category that decreased”. However, sentence structures are mostly simple, and some grammatical errors remain. For example, “Petroleum products earn the highest value” shifts into the present tense, while the data describe 2015 and 2016; “Textiles was increased” uses an incorrect passive form; and “Agricultural products and textiles were in equal export earnings” has an unclear grammatical construction. The opening also joins two sentences with “And” in a way that feels incomplete. Use past-tense reporting consistently and practise accurate comparative structures, such as “Textile earnings rose to…” and “Agricultural products and textiles recorded equal values in 2016.”
