IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many argue that the major devastating consequences on the environment is the loss of specific plants and animals species. Meanwhile, some believe that there are other essential environmental problems to be discussed. Although plants and animals are vital component for the environmental sustainability, I believe that other problems such as air and traffic pollution are major concerns.

On the one hand, human species are causing irreversible loss of particular plants and animals, which are negatively affecting the Earth's atmosphere by decreasing green areas and biodiversity. This is because certain human activities such as deforestation to obtain more land and hunting animals for food and entertainment, leading to decline in plants and animals species. Moreover, these species are important for the vitality and sustanability of environment because they produce fresh air and make up the continuous loop of life cycle. For example, substantial deforestation had lead to decrease in good quality air due to declining ratio of many plants. Although it provides oxygen and promotes food chain, I believe that traffic congestion is major environmental problem that leads to air polution and severe illnesses.

On the other hand, increased number of population had lead to excessive production of vehicles to accomodate individuals' need. This has caused traffic jam and excessive road choas, consequently producing more harmful carbon emissions which is deteriorating the Earth's atmosphere. Furthermore, carbon dioxide is harming the quality of air and creating air pollution, which is harmful for human's health. For instance, excessive release of carbon dioxide from motor-cars have caused respiratory problems in local people. I strongly believe that this is the major environmental concern that must be dealt in priority basis to decrease further environmental devastation.

In conclusion, despite loss of various plants and animals that helps in circulating good air and are the major source of life cycle, I believe that an increase in the number of vehicle production have caused traffic congestion which is ruining the quality of air and causing debilatating health problems.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You discuss both views and state a clear preference for other environmental problems, especially traffic-related air pollution. The first body paragraph explains how deforestation and hunting reduce biodiversity, while the second links vehicle use and emissions to health effects; these are relevant responses to the prompt. However, the two sides are not developed equally: the discussion of species loss is brief and its effects are asserted rather than fully explained, and the essay shifts from broader environmental problems to traffic pollution without considering other examples. The examples are plausible but general, such as respiratory problems among local people, with no detail to show their impact. Develop the reasoning on each side more fully and make the comparison behind your opinion explicit.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, and a conclusion. The progression from species loss to traffic pollution is easy to follow, and signposts such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” help readers navigate the argument. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent overall arrangement and shows some stronger control through paragraphing and logical sequencing. However, cohesion is occasionally mechanical, and some links are unclear. For example, “Although it provides oxygen and promotes food chain” has an unclear reference, and the contrast introduced by “Although” does not connect smoothly to the following claim about traffic congestion. Use clearer references and vary linking methods so relationships between claims are more precise.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “biodiversity,” “deforestation,” “carbon emissions,” and “respiratory problems,” which makes the environmental focus clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “irreversible loss” and “environmental sustainability.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “road chaos,” “good quality air,” and “dealt in priority basis.” Spelling errors such as “sustanability,” “polution,” and “debiliatating” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations, for example “air quality,” “traffic congestion,” and “addressed as a priority.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including clauses beginning with “Although,” “because,” and “which,” and most ideas remain understandable. Some sentences show useful control, such as the explanation that vehicle emissions harm air quality and human health. However, there are some errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “the major … consequences … is” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “human activities … leading to decline” is an incomplete construction. In “increased number of population had lead,” the article and verb form are inaccurate. Review agreement and past participles, and ensure dependent clauses are attached to a complete main clause. More consistent accuracy would make your complex sentences clearer.
