IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

It is often argued that major problem of the contemporary society is the extinction of some plants and animals species. But some say that there are various significant problems which need to be addressed. I will explain both views before explaining why I beleive that they are other important problems instead of extinction of plants and animals.

Proponents say that extinction of plants and animals species is one of the major problems of the society. It is true due to the fact that they maintain the ecosystem. If their species become extinct or endagered, it will disturbed the natural environment. Some plants are useful source of medicines and also have beneficial nutrients. Moreover, they are source of oxygen. If they are extinct, it would cause detrimental ramifications to the society. Consequently, wild life is also important for the preservation of ecosystem.

On the paradoxical side, opponents believe that there are other significant factors that are causing environmental problems. Land pollution causes by throwing of garbage and industrial waste is one of the major problems. Subsequently, marine ecosystem is also disturbed due to the waste coming from industries and fields. Noise pollution is a result of heavy traffc and transportation. It can lead to deafness and other health problems. Additionally, economic crises is also the contributing factor.

From my perespective, I also admit that there are numerous enironmental problems that need to be taken in consideration. No doubt extinction of animals and plants species is a serious problem but other conditions must not be ignored. They are the major contributors of environmental problems.

In conclusion, I would like to say that government should take into account other serious factors that are leading to major environmental problems rather than mere extinction of some species.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both views and state a position: you recognise species extinction as serious but argue that other environmental problems deserve attention. The first body paragraph gives relevant reasons, including ecosystem balance, medicines and oxygen. However, the discussion of the alternative view is less fully developed: pollution examples are listed, but their environmental consequences are not explained in depth, and “economic crises” is introduced without showing how it is an environmental problem. Your conclusion also calls for government action on other factors without identifying which should be prioritised or why. To strengthen the response, explain and support the comparison more clearly, and make your own position more precise throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. However, some connections feel mechanical, and the progression within paragraphs is not always clear. For example, “On the paradoxical side” introduces the opposing view awkwardly, while “Consequently, wild life is also important” repeats the ecosystem point rather than advancing it. The shift from environmental pollution to “economic crises” is also abrupt. Use more precise transitions and connect each example explicitly to the paragraph’s main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “ecosystem,” “industrial waste,” “marine ecosystem,” and “detrimental ramifications.” These choices make the subject clear, and some less common expressions show an effort to vary your language. However, several word-choice and collocation errors reduce precision, such as “plants and animals species,” “land pollution causes by throwing of garbage,” and “taken in consideration.” There are also spelling errors, including “beleive,” “endagered,” “traffc,” and “perespective.” Check spelling carefully and learn common environmental collocations as complete phrases; this will make your vocabulary more natural and accurate.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If their species become extinct or endangered…” and a concession beginning “No doubt… but…”. Meaning is generally understandable, but some errors in articles, agreement, verb forms, and sentence construction remain. For example, “major problem” needs an article, “it will disturbed” has an incorrect verb form, and “economic crises is” has a subject–verb agreement problem. The sentence beginning “If they are extinct” also has an unclear reference. Review article use and agreement, and check that each conditional clause has a correctly formed verb. More accurate control of these structures would make the argument easier to follow.
