IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

One group of people argued that the main ecosystem problem of current time is the extinsion of species of living organisms. While, other group assume there are others crucial enviromental problems to be solved. I agree with the people who believes that their are other crucial enviromental problems which need to be viewed.

The people who loves animals and plants and animal believes that they should be protected. The main reason can be that they want to take care of animals and plants as they are source of our food. Plants and vegetables are the most important things, if we want to live. If the food runs out, we will die due to hunger. Trees are also vital for human life because of the oxygen, they produces oxygen. without oxygen, it is impossible to live. Many hunters hunt animals which is major risk to their survival. Government of many nations have taken many steps to protect the biodiversty and more reforms can be done in the upcoming days.

One the other hand, the people who think that more crucial options are here to be eyed. According to them, pollution is a matter to be looked the most because it can affect living organisms a lot. Ozone layer is also a important matter to be discussed. Water problems are rising. The rerason behind this is that reservoirs fresh water have been declined. Governments have taken many initiatives to protect water, ozone layer and to control pollution.

In conclusion, I agreed to the opinion which support thats there are other environmental problems because existence of human civilization is more important than animals and plants.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You discuss both viewpoints and state your own position: you explain why species should be protected, then identify pollution, ozone-layer damage and water shortages as other concerns, and conclude that broader environmental problems deserve priority. This gives the response a relevant foundation. However, the discussion is only partly developed. The case for protecting species focuses mainly on their value as food sources and trees’ production of oxygen, rather than explaining the wider consequences of biodiversity loss. The second view is mostly a list of problems, with little explanation of why they are more important or how they affect people and ecosystems. Your opinion is clear in the introduction and conclusion, but the comparison needs fuller reasoning and specific supporting examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, one paragraph for each view, and a conclusion. The transitions “On the other hand” and “In conclusion” help signal the main stages, and the reader can generally follow the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is limited: the first body paragraph moves from food and oxygen to hunting and government action without clearly linking these points, while the second lists several environmental concerns rather than developing a connected explanation. Some linking is awkward or repetitive, such as “The main reason can be that” and “According to them.” Improve cohesion by grouping related ideas, using clear references, and explaining how each example supports the paragraph’s main point.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “extinction,” “biodiversity,” “pollution,” “ozone layer” and “fresh water,” so the subject is clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “initiatives” and “crucial.” However, the range is limited and several word-choice or collocation problems make parts unnatural or unclear: “ecosystem problem of current time,” “more crucial options are here to be eyed,” and “looked the most” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling errors such as “extinsion,” “enviromental,” “biodiversty” and “rerason” are noticeable. Build a more accurate set of environmental collocations and check spelling; this will make your meaning easier to follow.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “If the food runs out, we will die due to hunger” and a reason clause beginning “because.” However, the range is limited, and complex attempts often contain errors. Examples include “people who believes,” “they are source,” “the oxygen, they produces oxygen,” and “reservoirs fresh water have been declined.” Articles, agreement, verb forms and sentence boundaries need more reliable control. Capitalisation and punctuation also cause problems, as in “without oxygen” after a full stop and the opening fragment “While, other group assume…”. Practise building complete sentences with accurate subject–verb agreement and articles, then proofread each sentence for punctuation and verb form.
