IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Rapid growth of urbanization has created various environment problems. Some people argue that the major problem in environment of the recent time is the loss of typical species of flora and fauna, While other believe there are other significant environmental problems. This essay will discuss both views before presenting my opinion.
On the one hand, some people believe that the loss of particular species of plants and animals is the main environmental problem these days. One of the major reason for this is technological advancement and urbanization which leads to destruction of plants and animals. For instance, the construction of roads, factories and residental buildings can destroy the habitat of many flora and fauna, which in turn leads to loss of those plants and animals. Furthermore, normal ecosystem and biodiversity is threaten.
On the other hand, other argue that there are more important environmental problems in the present time. Firstly, air pollution is one of the major environmental problem that need immediate attention. Air pollution not only affects the environmental conditions but also exacerbate the health problems of human beings. Likewise, noise is another detrimental probelm for environment. Noise affects the mental health of human being and hearing ability of animals too. For example, if a person is suffering from respiratory problem, then the air pollution can exacerbate that condition and may need emergency help.
In my opinion, there are other signifiant problems like air pollution and noise pollution in environment than the loss of particular species of plants and animals. So, government also need to focus in environmental problems along with other work side by side.
To conclude, although some people believe that the main environmental problem of the present time is loss of some species of plants and animals, I believe there are other important environmental problems like air pollution, noise pollution that are threat to human lives.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address both views and state your position: the first body paragraph links species loss to habitat destruction, while the second discusses air and noise pollution, and your conclusion repeats your preference for the latter concerns. However, the discussion is unevenly developed. The explanation of species loss includes a cause and an effect on biodiversity, but the case for other problems relies mainly on naming pollution and describing health impacts; noise pollution receives little support beyond one sentence. Your example about a person with a respiratory problem illustrates air pollution’s effect, but does not establish why these issues are more important overall. To strengthen the response, compare the scale or consequences of the problems and develop a clearer reason for your ranking. The response meets the stated length requirement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction, separate paragraphs for the two views, your opinion, and a conclusion. Signposting such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “To conclude” helps readers follow the discussion. The progression is generally logical, but some connections are mechanical or unclear. For example, “Furthermore, normal ecosystem and biodiversity is threaten” does not clearly explain how this point follows from habitat destruction, and the opinion paragraph largely repeats the second body paragraph rather than advancing the comparison. Use referencing and linking to show relationships between claims, and make the conclusion synthesize the reasons rather than simply restate your view. This would make cohesion more natural and consistent.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “flora and fauna,” “habitat,” “biodiversity,” “air pollution,” and “respiratory problem.” These terms make the subject clear, and attempts such as “detrimental” show some ambition. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “major problem in environment of the recent time,” “normal ecosystem,” and “focus in environmental problems” sound unnatural. There are also spelling errors, including “residental,” “probelm,” and “signifiant,” which reduce precision. Aim for more natural academic combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “the main environmental concern today,” “ecosystem balance,” and “focus on environmental issues.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including a relative clause in “the construction of roads, factories and residental buildings can destroy the habitat …, which in turn leads to loss.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, errors in agreement, articles, and verb forms recur: “other believe,” “One of the major reason,” “biodiversity is threaten,” and “government also need” should be corrected. Some sentence patterns are also awkwardly controlled, as in “Noise affects the mental health of human being and hearing ability of animals too.” Review subject–verb agreement, singular and plural forms, and article use, then proofread each sentence. More accurate control of these structures would make your complex sentences clearer.
