Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing both views and providing an opinion. However, the development of ideas is significantly hampered by excessive repetition. The phrase 'the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species' is repeated verbatim five times, which prevents the essay from exploring the topic in depth. While the student attempts to explain the consequences of species loss (e.g., the impact on food chains), the arguments are underdeveloped and circular. The response lacks a clear structure, and the opinion is not supported by a well-reasoned argument, leading to a limited exploration of the task requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay lacks a logical flow. Paragraphing is used, but the content within the paragraphs is repetitive and lacks progression. Cohesive devices are either missing or used incorrectly, such as the repetitive use of 'The main environmental problem...' to start new sections. There is no clear transition between the discussion of pollution and the discussion of species loss. The referencing is often unclear, and the overall arrangement of ideas feels mechanical and disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the writer's line of reasoning.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is basic and repetitive. The student frequently uses the word 'extended' when they clearly mean 'extinct' or 'extinction', which is a significant error in word choice that impacts meaning. Other phrases like 'very concerning and alarming situation' are used in a repetitive manner. There is a lack of variety in the language used to discuss environmental issues, and the student struggles to express complex ideas due to a limited range of vocabulary. To improve, the student needs to focus on learning topic-specific collocations and synonyms for common words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede communication. There are issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'insects become more'), incorrect word forms (e.g., 'extended' instead of 'extinct'), and awkward sentence structures. Punctuation is inconsistent, and there is a lack of complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar—such as articles, pluralization, and verb tense—prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. The writing relies heavily on simple sentences that are often grammatically flawed.
