IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, the extinction of plants and animals has become a serious concerned across the world. While many argue that the loss of particular species of animals and plants is the main environmental problem, I believe that excessive use of fossil fuel and poor management of littre are mainly responsible for environmental degradation.
On the one hand, many people believe that the extinction of particular species causes several environmental problems. One of the major negative consequences is that the loss of animals may destory the whole ecosystem. This is mainly because many animals depend on other animals as a source of food to surive. For example, tigers are generally hunt deer in order to survive. Therefore, if some animals become extinct then the whole ecosystem may destroy, which cause environmental problems. In addition, trees play a vital role in the protection of biodiversity. Plants are generally absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere. If a particular species of plants loss, it may increase the amount of carbon in the atmosphere, making a significant contribution to climate change.
On the other hand, there are some other factors, including the usage of fossil fuels and waste disposal, that may cause serious envrionmental issues. In these days, vehicles such as cars, buses and aeroplanes emit massive amounts of carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, creating air pollution. As a result, air pollution makes a significant contribution to climate change. Furthermore, people are throwing littre without following any rules and regulations. The poor management of waste may cause soil degradation. Therefore, governments should take appropriate measures to raise public awareness so that people focus on renewable energy and dispose the waste properly.
In conclusion, though loss of animals causes serious issues in environment, I would argue that governments should give priority to the usage of non-renewbale energy and encourage the people to dispose the waste in proper places.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the loss of species and other environmental concerns while providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, though the development is somewhat basic. For instance, the explanation of the ecosystem is a bit repetitive, and the link between species loss and climate change could be more nuanced. However, the position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, you should aim to provide more sophisticated examples and deeper analysis of the implications of these environmental problems rather than listing them.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing (e.g., 'the whole ecosystem may destroy' instead of 'be destroyed'). The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by using a wider variety of linking phrases to connect sentences more naturally.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'biodiversity', 'degradation', and 'renewable energy'. However, there are several spelling errors ('concerned' instead of 'concern', 'littre' instead of 'litter', 'destory' instead of 'destroy', 'surive' instead of 'survive', 'non-renewbale' instead of 'non-renewable'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not impede overall communication. To improve, focus on proofreading for common spelling mistakes and try to incorporate more precise collocations to demonstrate a higher level of lexical control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, there are recurring grammatical errors, particularly with verb forms and passive voice constructions (e.g., 'tigers are generally hunt' should be 'tigers generally hunt'; 'Plants are generally absorb' should be 'Plants generally absorb'; 'if a particular species of plants loss' should be 'is lost'). These errors occur frequently but rarely cause confusion. To achieve a higher score, focus on mastering subject-verb agreement and the correct usage of passive versus active voice, as these are foundational to clear academic writing.
