IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, people believe that the extinction of certain species of floura and funa is a major environmental problem. While opponents consider other environmental problems are of more importance. In this essay, I will discuss both sides of the arguments support my view in favor of the later point.
Animals and plants play an important role in maintaining and regulating the environmental homeostasis. The loss of their specific species may result in dysregulation of food chain due to their dependency on one another for the food. For instance, extinction of small fishes will disturb an aquatic life as big fishes like whales are predators of small ones. Moreover, extinction of honeybees will affect the pollination process and lead to loss of various plants.
Despite the importance of plants and animals in environment, there are more problems which are essential to be addressed including, water pollution, air pollution, and climate change. Among these, the climate change is most critical problem as rise in temperature and melting of glaciers causes urban flooding affecting millions of people every year. Moreover, air pollution is causing several respiratory diseases in people and increasing the medical burden. Finally, the adverse affects of water pollution have a negative impact on aquatic life.
In my opinion, aforementioned environmental problems outweigh the concern about extinction of particular plants and animals species. This issue can be addressed by taking necessary measures to preserve endangered species. While the other environmental problems are affecting the society not only at the present time but will have long term effects.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the importance of biodiversity and the argument for other environmental issues like climate change. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention that climate change causes urban flooding, the link between this and why it is 'more important' than species loss could be more deeply explored to reach a higher band. The essay is balanced, but the arguments could benefit from more specific, nuanced examples to fully support your stance.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Despite', and 'Finally' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'the later point' (should be 'the latter') and 'the aforementioned environmental problems'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two sides of the argument. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices and ensure that the flow between sentences is more natural and less reliant on simple listing words.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'environmental homeostasis', 'predators', and 'pollination'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'floura and funa' (flora and fauna) and 'affects' (should be 'effects' as a noun). Additionally, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'the later point' instead of 'the latter'. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, it lacks the sophistication and precision required for a higher band. Focusing on correct spelling and more precise collocations will help improve your score in this area.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the climate change', 'the aquatic life') and word forms ('adverse affects'). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'opponents consider other environmental problems are of more importance', which would be better phrased as 'opponents consider other environmental problems to be of more importance'. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on mastering article usage and ensuring subject-verb agreement in complex sentences.
