Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The concerns regarding the environmental problems have been constantly rising. Few believe that the main problem arises from animals and plants species getting extinct. While others argue that there are more problems which require greater attention. These two opinions form the majority of the concerns and shall be discussed further in the esssay.
Extinction of certain species is very harmful to the environment, as it causes an impact in the ecological cycle and the food chain. It can lead to the imabalnce of the population of certain species causing further problems. As an evidence certain species of sparrows have decreased in numbers due to the rapid expansion of the telephone industry in India. Increasing network towers and high frequency causes brain distortion and confusion in sparrows and causes their death. Sparrows feed on certain microorganisms and worms, as they have decreased considerably the numbers of such worms has increased significantly. Increase in numbers of such organims leads to the damage in plants. So, this is a never ending cycle and one thing leads to another contributing further to the impact.
There are more environmental concerns such as global warming, which is caused by continuos industrial growth and increased usage of fossil fuels. Moreover, the global air quality has been detoriating rapidly and human life expectancy has decreased significantly thorughout the years. As Human population has increased torughout the years and acres of land has been aquired over the years by clearing forests, major impact to the enviroment has already been done. In addition, this is an irreversible change and it is already very late to reconsider the situation.
In conclusion, I would like to add that it is more important to focus on stabilizing the population of endangered species and their rehabilitation. Furthermore, it can bring back the balance in the food chain and the environmental cycles which can help to balance the nature. It is only worth allocating our resources on reversible damages rather than focusing on irreversible ones.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion in the conclusion. The ideas regarding species extinction are well-supported with a specific example (sparrows in India), which shows good development. However, the discussion of 'other' environmental problems is slightly less developed, focusing primarily on global warming and human population growth without as much depth as the first body paragraph. The position is consistent throughout, and the essay meets all requirements of the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used effectively to separate the two main viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'In addition', and 'Furthermore' are used to link ideas, though some transitions feel slightly mechanical. The progression of ideas is generally clear, although the link between the sparrow example and the broader conclusion could be more tightly integrated to improve the flow of the argument.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate and allows for the expression of ideas with reasonable precision. There are some good collocations like 'ecological cycle', 'food chain', and 'human life expectancy'. However, there are several spelling errors ('imabalnce', 'continuos', 'detoriating', 'thorughout', 'torughout', 'aquired', 'enviroment') that slightly detract from the overall quality. While the range is sufficient to convey the message clearly, the presence of these errors prevents a higher score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is an attempt to use complex sentences, such as 'As Human population has increased... major impact to the environment has already been done.' However, there are frequent minor grammatical errors, such as missing articles ('as an evidence' should be 'as evidence') and issues with subject-verb agreement or preposition usage. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout, and the communication is not impeded.
