IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The extent to which environmental problems have become a pressing concern has sparked considerable debate in contemporary society. While some maintain that the main environmental issue is the loss of particular species of plants and animals, others strongly argue that there are other important environmental problems. In my opinion, a balanced approach is the most appropriate. This essay will critically examine both perspectives before presenting a reasoned conclusion.

Proponents of species loss highlight several compelling concerns. A primary argument is that it is due to growing population in rural regions. For instance, when houses are built in rural areas, they can diminish the growth of plants and animals as a result, the main issue is shortage of oxygen in the air and this also creates obstacles that impede progress. Consequently, many regard it as a serious and growing challenge.

On the other hand, pollution is not without significant challenges. A major concern is that, if poorly managed, it may trigger unforeseen complications or place undue strain on certain groups. For example, when more vehicles are introduced without adequate safeguards, they can diminish effectiveness or disproportionately disadvantage people's quality of life. Therefore, critics emphasize the necessity of careful regulation to mitigate these risks.

Considering both perspectives, it becomes evident that the issue is multifaceted rather than straightforward. While the problems associated with species loss are substantial, other problems like pollution warrant equal consideration. In my view, the most sustainable approach lies in striking a balance.

In conclusion, although species loss presents undeniable problems, the possible decline in environmental conditions due to pollution raises legitimate concerns that must not be overlooked. Overall, a balanced and well‑regulated strategy appears the most effective, as it enables progress while safeguarding stability and fairness.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses both views and provides a clear opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the argument regarding species loss is linked to 'shortage of oxygen' and 'obstacles that impede progress,' which are vague and lack scientific or logical depth. Similarly, the discussion on pollution is generic, focusing on 'unforeseen complications' rather than specific environmental impacts like climate change or ocean acidification. While the task is addressed, the supporting arguments lack the depth required for a higher band score. The position is consistent, but the supporting evidence needs to be more concrete and analytical to fully satisfy the requirements of the prompt.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance,' 'Consequently,' and 'On the other hand' are used effectively to guide the reader through the argument. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a central idea. However, the progression of ideas within the body paragraphs is occasionally mechanical. The transition between the general statement about pollution and the specific example of vehicles is a bit abrupt. Overall, the flow is clear, and the logical structure is maintained throughout the text, meeting the criteria for a solid band 7.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, with some attempts at more sophisticated phrasing such as 'pressing concern,' 'compelling concerns,' and 'multifaceted.' However, there is a reliance on somewhat vague terminology (e.g., 'unforeseen complications,' 'diminish effectiveness'). The range is sufficient to convey meaning, but it lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands. There are no significant spelling errors, and the word choice is generally appropriate, though it does not demonstrate a wide range of less common lexical items used with high precision.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

The essay demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There is good control over basic grammar, and punctuation is generally accurate. Complex structures, such as 'While some maintain that... others strongly argue that...' are used correctly. There are very few grammatical errors, and those that exist do not impede communication. However, the range of complex structures is somewhat limited, and the sentence variety could be improved to demonstrate greater flexibility. The writing is clear and easy to follow, reflecting a competent level of grammatical control.
