Student answer (Band 7.0)

According to a few individuals the recent primary ecological issue is the extinction of particular plant species and creatures, while others think that there are some bigger environmental issues as compare to this. I have mixed opinions on this topic because I think both environmental problems require equal attention in order to improve the situation.

On one side, there is a rising concern regarding species eradication of particular plants and animals among some people. For instance, building new projects requires more land, in order to fulfil this requirement people are clearing out forest results in endangerment for some rare plants. Increasing demand for sea food ends up illegal hunting and catching too many fishes. In addition to that reduction in forest land will result in loss of habitat for a few extraordinary animals. I think in order to improve this situation people need to understand how crucial it is to save this rare species.

On the other hand, there are many other ecological crises that require strict actions. For example, disposal of harmful chemicals and trash in nature, increasing temperature results in global warming or air pollution because of excess use of vehicles. The authorities should focus on providing education regarding the importance of a clear atmosphere and impose stick law against problems like garbage disposal management. People should grow new plants and reduce usage of personal vehicles and start using public transport.

In conclusion, species extinction is a major environmental problem to solve, but at the same time other ecological issues like air and noise pollution, water purification are rising concerns among society. In my opinion, both problems need serious solutions to achieve balance within the environment.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the loss of species and other environmental issues, while providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and generally well-supported, such as the mention of habitat loss due to construction and the impact of pollution. However, some points could be developed further; for instance, the link between 'illegal hunting' and 'sea food' is a bit brief. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that each supporting example is fully explained to demonstrate a deeper understanding of the environmental impact.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On one side', 'In addition to that', and 'On the other hand' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'this rare species' (which should be plural 'these rare species'). Overall, the progression of ideas is clear, and the structure supports the argument well.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the writer to convey their ideas clearly. There is an attempt to use topic-specific terminology like 'ecological crises', 'species eradication', and 'global warming'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'as compare to this' (should be 'compared to this') and 'impose stick law' (should be 'strict laws'). While the range is sufficient, more precise and varied vocabulary would elevate the response. The errors present do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the writer attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'results in endangerment' (should be 'resulting in'), 'ends up illegal hunting' (should be 'leads to illegal hunting'), and 'a clear atmosphere' (should be 'a cleaner environment'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some missing articles and issues with subject-verb agreement. Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear throughout the text, and the grammar does not significantly hinder the reader's understanding.
