Student answer (Band 6.5)

In contemporary society, there are many environmental problems and it causes to the earth. Some people contend the main environmental problem of our is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Other argue that there are other substantial problems. Both view's reasons and relevant examples will be discussed in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, who supports the conservation of particular species and animals because many endangered species and animals number is increasing. First and foremost, every species of animals and plants are essential in food chain. For instance, in food chain, bees is important in crop production and if bees become extinct then crop would not pollinated. In addition, once endangered species become extinct, they cannot back into the earth and future generation would not see particular species.

Conversely, many people opine that other problems are more important. Firstly, global warming is colossal problem in modern era. It can cause rising temperature and melting glaciers. For instance, an increase heatwaves and floods damage the homes and agriculture. Moreover, green house effect is also increasing because of pollution such as air pollution by vehicles carbon emission, and factory's wastes. For example, nowadays because of vehicles and factories in Delhi, it is observing green house effect.

I would argue that, environmental problems like loss of species of plants and trees have substantial effect on humanity. Therefore, government and individual should more focus on this types of problems. Without crop production or important species we cannot survive in the earth.

To sum up, although environmental problems such as green house effect and heatwaves need action, endangered species of plants and animals are more important than other problems because they cannot come to back after extinction.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the role of bees in the food chain and the impact of global warming. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding the importance of species could be further extended with more specific ecological consequences beyond just crop production. The position is consistent throughout the essay, and the conclusion effectively summarizes the main points. To reach a higher band, ensure that arguments are supported with more depth and nuanced analysis rather than relying on brief examples.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'Conversely', and 'In addition', which help guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are instances where the flow is interrupted by grammatical errors, such as 'it causes to the earth' in the introduction. Referencing is generally clear, but the connection between sentences could be smoother to improve the overall progression of ideas. The paragraphing is appropriate for the task, providing a clear structure for the reader.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the student to express their ideas clearly. There are attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'endangered species', 'extinct', 'global warming', and 'greenhouse effect'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'it is observing green house effect' and 'they cannot come to back'. These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they do limit the precision of the writing. Expanding the range of vocabulary to include more sophisticated synonyms and collocations would help improve the score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the student attempts complex sentences, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the earth'), verb forms ('crop would not pollinated'), and prepositions ('focus on this types of problems'). Some sentences are also structurally incomplete or awkward, such as 'it causes to the earth'. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct article usage would be beneficial.
