Student answer (Band 7.0)
Some people argue that the main environmental issue today is the loss of particular species of plants and animals while other believes that more serious environmental problems exist. This essay will discuss both views before explaining why I believe that broader environmental issues deserve greater attention.
On the one hand, the loss of biodiversity is undoubtedly a serious concern. Every species in this planet plays a vital role in maintaining the ecosystem. It is more like co-existing and assisting one other. When any of kind of species of plants and animals become extinct, it directly affects the food chain, leading to negative consequences for other species and even human. Therefore, protecting endangered species is essential for preserving ecological stability.
On the other hand, it is also true that there are several other existing environmental problems in the planet. Issues such as climate change, pollution and deforestation affect the entire ecosystem and ecology. I believe global warming is a root cause of all the existing issues. This resulted in rising sea levels, extreme weather events and habitat destruction, threatening both wildlife and human population. For instance, plastic waste in oceans kills marine animals and pollute water sources. Air pollution also cause serious health problems for millions pf people every year.
To sum up, although species extinction is an alarming issue that requires immediate action, broader environmental problems have a greater impact and should be given higher priority. By tackling these underlying causes, we can safeguard both nature as well as humanity.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both the importance of biodiversity and the argument for broader environmental issues. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The ideas are relevant and logically developed, though the discussion of broader issues could be slightly more extended to reach a higher band. For example, while you mention climate change and pollution, providing a more specific link to why these are 'more important' than species loss would strengthen the argument. Overall, the task is well-covered with a clear, consistent perspective.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'To sum up' effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. The progression of ideas is smooth, and referencing is generally clear. To improve, ensure that the transition between sentences within paragraphs is slightly more varied, as some connections feel a bit mechanical. However, the overall structure is sound and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biodiversity', 'ecological stability', 'habitat destruction', and 'underlying causes'. There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'in this planet' (should be 'on this planet') and 'any of kind of species' (which is redundant). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, some phrasing is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and avoiding minor errors in preposition usage, which will enhance the natural flow of your writing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'other believes' (should be 'others believe'), 'any of kind of species' (awkward phrasing), and 'Air pollution also cause' (subject-verb agreement error). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and pluralization. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while ensuring they remain error-free will help you achieve a higher band in this criterion.
