IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, some citizens contend that the biggest environmental decline is due to removal of certain categories of plants and animals while other residents assert that there are other crucial environmental reasons. I shall discuss both views before explaining why I agree with both of them.
On the one hand, it is general perception that earth temperature fluctuates due to deforestation which also triggers the death of various wild animals who survive based on plant-based diet. It is eco-friendly for earth to have a specific number of trees and when this figure raises, the herbivores such as cows, sheeps and elephants can consume them to maintain a balance in ecosystem. For example, when the hunters eliminate the herbivores for entertainment, it reduces their population. When there is no balance in nature in form of animals and plants, the earth will have to face numerous environmental problems. Therefore, I parshare this idea.
On the other hand, other residents argue that other important factors such pollution is the main cause of environmental damages. The general public doesn't care about the pollution it generates everyday in the form of smoke, plastic and gases. The earth's population is raising sharply which is consuming more resources in the form of plants and animals. Moreover, the individuals are responsible for contributing more pollution in nature. Hence, I partly agree with view.
It can be concluded that, deforestation and pollution are the main causes of environmental changes which is triggered by mankind. The residents cut the trees for housing and slaughter animals for food which is the cause of shortage and extinction of various trees and animals.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both views and provides an opinion, though the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. The argument regarding species loss is slightly confused by the inclusion of irrelevant points about hunters and cows, which does not directly address the 'environmental problem' aspect of biodiversity loss. The second body paragraph identifies pollution but lacks specific, well-supported examples to strengthen the argument. While the position is clear, the reasoning is repetitive and lacks the depth required for a higher band. To improve, ensure that each point is fully extended with logical explanations and concrete, relevant examples that directly relate to the prompt's core themes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organized into clear paragraphs, and there is a logical progression of ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', and 'Moreover' are used to link sentences and paragraphs. However, the use of these devices is sometimes mechanical, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'I parshare this idea' (which appears to be a typo) and the vague conclusion. The transition between the discussion of species loss and the broader environmental impact could be smoother. Overall, the structure is coherent, but the flow between ideas could be more sophisticated.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. There are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'removal of certain categories' instead of 'loss of species' and 'earth temperature fluctuates' which is not the most accurate way to describe global warming. The repetition of words like 'pollution', 'animals', and 'plants' limits the lexical variety. To achieve a higher score, you should aim to use more precise academic vocabulary and demonstrate a better grasp of collocations related to environmental science.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'the earth's population is raising' (should be 'rising'), 'sheeps' (incorrect plural), and 'other important factors such pollution' (missing 'as'). There are also issues with article usage and subject-verb agreement throughout the text. While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy and diversifying sentence structures would be beneficial.
