Student answer (Band 5.5)

This essay will argue that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. while, some people believe that there are also other factors which is the reason behind environmental problems. this essay will discuss both views before explaining why i believe that there are also other factors which affect environment.

On one hand, it is absolutely true that in our time we loss so many particular species of plants and animals. for example when amazon forest faces fire risk however that was unintentional situation but many forests of different countries faces risk of fire which raise a serious environment problem and leads to loss of particular plants and animals.

On the other hand, there are many more factor affecting environment such as deforestation however humans are also the reason behind deforestation. it happens due to construction and development of urban areas due to which humans destroy many forests. many protests are happened in India to protect forests and their species of plants and animals such as Chipko moment. government should take steps against serious environmental problems and they should make strict policies and laws to protect environment. such as Australia have very strict laws to protect their environment.

Overall, there are many factors which affect environment and leads to serious problem but some are intentional and some are unintentional however, we try our best to measure and find solution for unintentional problems but we can control problems which are in our hand like deforestation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response addresses both sides of the argument, but the development is uneven. While you mention the loss of species and other environmental factors like deforestation, the ideas are somewhat repetitive and lack depth. Your own opinion is stated in the introduction and conclusion, but it is not clearly supported by a strong, logical argument. The essay tends to list examples rather than fully exploring the implications of the environmental problems discussed. To improve, ensure each body paragraph focuses on a clear, distinct point that directly supports your position, providing more detailed analysis rather than just mentioning examples like the Chipko movement.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical flow is often disrupted by mechanical transitions and repetitive phrasing. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', but they are not always used effectively to connect ideas. The referencing is sometimes unclear, and the progression of ideas within paragraphs feels disjointed. For instance, the transition between the Amazon fire example and the general discussion of deforestation is abrupt. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next will significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. You rely on basic terms like 'environmental problems' and 'factors' repeatedly. There are also some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'we loss' (should be 'we lose') and 'many protests are happened' (should be 'have occurred'). To achieve a higher score, try to incorporate more topic-specific vocabulary related to environmental science and conservation, and focus on using words in their correct grammatical form. Avoid repeating the same phrases throughout the essay.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('many more factor affecting', 'many forests... faces risk'), incorrect verb tenses, and missing articles. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally understandable, the high frequency of errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly verb forms and pluralisation, to ensure your writing is more polished and professional.
