Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a personal opinion, meeting the basic requirements of the task. However, the development of ideas is somewhat superficial. For instance, the explanation of the food chain is repetitive, and the discussion of 'other' environmental problems is vague, focusing on general pollution rather than specific, competing environmental crises. The position is stated in the introduction but remains underdeveloped in the body paragraphs, lacking a clear, nuanced justification for why biodiversity loss should be considered the primary concern. To improve, ensure that each point is supported by more specific, logical reasoning rather than general statements.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or inaccurate. Phrases like 'To explain it that' and 'To clarify it that' are non-standard and awkward. Additionally, the transition between ideas is sometimes abrupt, and the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the final paragraph where the connection between the arguments and the conclusion is weak. Improving the variety and accuracy of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would significantly enhance the flow of the essay.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The vocabulary is limited and contains several instances of inappropriate word choice. For example, the word 'pensive' is used incorrectly to mean 'pressing' or 'serious'. There are also issues with collocations, such as 'make a soil in tight condition' and 'land escaping problems'. While the student attempts to use topic-specific vocabulary like 'pollination' and 'deforested', the overall range is restricted, and the frequent errors in word choice occasionally impede the reader's understanding of the intended meaning.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
The essay relies heavily on simple sentence structures, and attempts at complex sentences are frequently marred by grammatical errors. There are consistent issues with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'many plants and animals helps', 'pollution are become') and article usage. Punctuation is also problematic, with inconsistent spacing and comma usage. While the meaning is generally discernible, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the response from reaching a higher band. Focusing on mastering basic sentence construction and proofreading for subject-verb agreement would be highly beneficial.
