IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
There is an ongoing debate whether the extinction of certain birds and animals species needs more attention or other environmental issues are more significant to be considered. This essay is an attempt to shed some light on both viewpoints before giving any appropriate opinion.
On the one hand, the disappearance of certain species of plants, animals and birds has posed serious threat to the biodiversity. There are several factors responsible for this issue such as deforestation which has led the endangered to the edge of extinction by destructing their habitats. If not taken seriously, several species of animals and plants will only be found in the photographs since their existence will be eliminated. Thus, considering this issue less significant can be a stupidity.
On the other hand, despite of aforementioned issue, other bigger problems can not be overlooked. The biggest one is climatic change which has arisen from the increasing temperature of earth. The growing amount of carbon emissions, green house gases and deforestation are responsible for this problem.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 250 words, reaching only 169 words. Consequently, the task is only partially addressed. While you introduce both viewpoints, the development of ideas is severely limited. You mention deforestation and climate change, but these points lack the necessary depth, examples, or logical extension required for a Task 2 essay. Furthermore, you do not provide a clear, developed personal opinion as requested by the prompt. To improve, you must expand each body paragraph with specific evidence and ensure your own position is clearly stated and supported throughout the essay.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0
The essay is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a start, but the lack of length prevents a proper structure. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand', which helps the reader follow the transition between points. However, the progression of ideas is cut short. Because the essay is incomplete, the overall coherence is significantly impacted. To improve, ensure you have a clear introduction, two distinct body paragraphs with supporting evidence, and a concluding paragraph that summarizes your main points and restates your opinion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for basic communication, but it lacks the range and precision expected at higher levels. You use some relevant terms like 'biodiversity', 'deforestation', and 'carbon emissions', which is positive. However, there are some awkward phrasings, such as 'can be a stupidity' (which is not idiomatic) and 'the endangered' (which should be 'endangered species'). To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and a wider variety of academic vocabulary to express your ideas more naturally and effectively.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and some complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that hinder the flow, such as 'despite of aforementioned issue' (should be 'despite the aforementioned issue') and 'the increasing temperature of earth' (missing the article 'the'). Additionally, 'has led the endangered to the edge of extinction' is grammatically incomplete. While these errors do not completely block communication, they are frequent enough to impact the overall quality. Focus on mastering basic article usage and prepositional phrases to improve your accuracy.
