IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.5)

Debates surrounding environmental degradation often center on determining the most critical issue facing our planet today. While some argue that the loss of biodiversity through the extinction of specific plant and animal species in the primary concern, others believe that alternative ecological challenges are more pressing. This essay will examine why climate change represents a far more fundamental threat.

On the one hand, proponents of prioritizing biodiversity argue that the extinction of flora and fauna disrupts entire ecosystems. Nature functions as a complex, interconnected web where the disappearance of a single species can trigger a devastating domino effect. For instance, the decline of bee populations heavily compromises global agriculture due to their indispensable role in pollinating food crops. Furthermore, many unique plant species hold untapped medical potential, and their eradication eliminates any chance of discovering novel life-saving treatments. Therefore, protecting natural habitats and preventing species loss is undeniably crucial for maintaining the planet's ecological balance.

On the other hand, many scientists and policymakers contend that other environmental crises, particularly climate change and global warming, are more urgent. Rising global temperatures, fueled by greenhouse gas emissions, are causing rising sea levels, severe droughts, and catastrophic weather patterns. These developments present an immediate, existential threat to human civilization, potentially rendering large coastal regions uninhabitable within decades. More importantly, climate change serves as a primary catalyst for many other ecological disasters, including widespread habitat destruction and the accelerated loss of species.

To sum up, while the accelerating loss of biodiversity is a tragic and dangerous phenomenon that threatens food security and medicine, it is largely a symptom of a broader crisis. In my view, global climate change is a much more critical environmental issue because its impacts are universally destructive, threatening both the survival of humanity and the very ecosystems that plants and animals rely on to survive.
