Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people believe that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others argue that there are more important problems. I strongly believe that apart from the loss of some particular species, environmental problems such as land and water pollution have contributed negatively to the environment.

On the one hand, one major reason why some individuals say that the main environmental problem is the loss of some important plants and animals is that some plants have nutritional benefits that provides humans with essential nutrients and have medicinal functions that helps to to repair body tissue. For example, some green leaves have gone into extinction.

By contrast, there is no doubt that there are more important environmental problems affecting the ecosystem. Air and land pollution have a detrimental effect in the surrounding. When poisonous gases from industries such as carbon dioxide is released into the atmosphere, it can result in respiratory disorders when it is inhaled by human beings. Also, due to improper disposal of waste in the surroundings, food and drink product can easily be contaminated. Consequently, it can make indviduals more vulnurable to diseases including malaria and tyhiod. For example, individuals who continuously inhale carbon dioxide are at risk of lung disorders.

In conclusion, other environmental problems such as the release of green house gases in the environment can negatively affect the environment and put residents are risk of serious health problems. It can also make the environment unsafe for human existence.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a personal opinion, though the development is somewhat uneven. While you acknowledge the importance of biodiversity, the discussion on the 'other' environmental problems is more detailed than the first perspective. The argument regarding the medicinal benefits of plants is a good start, but it lacks specific examples or depth to fully support the claim. The conclusion is brief and does not fully synthesize the two views or reiterate your position clearly. To improve, ensure that both sides of the argument are given equal weight and that your personal opinion is integrated more explicitly throughout the essay rather than just in the introduction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, and there is a clear progression of ideas. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'By contrast,' and 'Consequently' to link your points. However, the transition between the introduction and the body paragraphs could be smoother. Additionally, some referencing is slightly repetitive, and the paragraphing is functional but could be more sophisticated. The overall structure is coherent, but the flow between sentences occasionally feels a bit mechanical. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the cohesion of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'detrimental effect,' 'respiratory disorders,' and 'contaminated.' However, there are some spelling errors, such as 'vulnurable' and 'tyhiod,' and minor collocation issues like 'gone into extinction' (should be 'become extinct'). While you attempt to use less common vocabulary, the precision is sometimes lacking. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise academic collocations and ensure that your spelling is accurate, as these small errors can distract the reader and limit your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this level. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('some plants... provides,' 'medicinal functions that helps') and prepositional errors ('in the surrounding,' 'at risk of'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and prepositions. Proofreading your work for these common slips will help you achieve greater accuracy in your complex sentences.
