IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Opinions are divided on whether biodiversity loss is the most critical environment crises or if other ecological issues demand greater priority. While, the extiction of flora and fauna severely disrupts ecosystems, I believe that global climate change represents a more existential threat to the planet and humanity alike.

On the one hand, the acclerating depletion of species poses a catastrophic to global ecosystems. Every organism plays a specific role in maintaining the food chain and ecological balance. For instance, the decline in bee populations threatens global agriculture, as these insects are vital for pollinating crops that fed billions of humans. Therefore, losing specific plants and animals can trigger a domino effect leading to the collapse of entire habitats and threatning human food security.

On the other hand, many argue that atmoapheric polluton and global warming are far more pressing dangers. Greenhouse gas emmisions have led to rising global temperatures. melting glaciers, and extreme weathers events. These shifts do not just harm specific wildlife but threaten the survival of all livnig things by altering the habitiality of Earth. For example, severe droughts and rising sea levels can displace entire human coastal populations and destroy vast agricultural lands. Furthermore, climate change acts as a primary catalyst for species loss anyway, making it the root cause the requires immediate global intervention.

In conclusion, while the extinction of flora and fauna destabilzes natural food chains, it is only a symptom of a larger ecological crises. In my opinion, addressing climate change and global warming is more critical , as it underpins all other environmental challenges.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, particularly the link between climate change and biodiversity loss. The position is consistent throughout the essay. To reach a higher band, the student could provide more nuanced examples or explore the counter-arguments with slightly more depth, as the current development is somewhat brief. However, the task requirements are fully met with a logical flow of ideas.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'On the other hand', 'For instance', and 'Furthermore' are used effectively to guide the reader. Paragraphing is appropriate, and each paragraph has a clear central topic. The progression of ideas is smooth, though some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Overall, the structure is clear and supports the development of the argument.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student demonstrates a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision, using terms like 'biodiversity loss', 'existential threat', 'catalyst', and 'destabilizes'. There are some spelling errors, such as 'extiction', 'acclerating', 'atmoapheric', 'polluton', 'emmisions', 'livnig', and 'crises' (used as singular). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. The vocabulary is generally appropriate for an academic context, but more careful proofreading is needed to address the frequent spelling slips.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the conditional-like structure in the conclusion and the use of participial phrases. There are several grammatical slips, including 'the most critical environment crises' (should be 'environmental crises'), 'poses a catastrophic to' (missing noun), and 'the root cause the requires' (should be 'that requires'). Punctuation is generally sound, though there is an unnecessary comma after 'While' in the first paragraph. The errors do not significantly impede meaning, but they prevent a higher score.
