IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people argue that the extinction of certain plant and animal species is the biggest enviromental problem that we face today, while others argue that there are many other enviromental problems that are more important. I believe with the former viewpoint because some plants and animals play a major role in balancing our whole ecosystem.

Climate change has started affecting our day to day lives with the global rise in temperature , natural disasters like storms, floods and wildfire , are becoming very frequent and haphazard. Which tear our homes down and ruin the infrastructure. These also end up taking many lives. This mostly happens due to man made global warming but i would still argue that global warming is not the most serious enviromental issue we face today.

On the other hand the loss of even a sinle species could imbalance the whole ecosystem. For example if corals become exitinct many of the aquatic plants and animals which used to feed off of it would also die resulting a complete disruption of the balance of the ecosystem. another example is that if primary predators like tigers would not exist their preys like deer and giraffes would reproduce in large figures. Something like this could really alter the balance of the ecosystem. And since we are very much dependent on a well balanced ecosystems and a proper food chain it would be impossible to exist as ecosystem also provides us with clean water, freshair and lots of medicinal plants. I think protecting certain species from becoming extinct is very important.

In conclusion, even though climate change is a big enviromental issue and has impacted our life alot, I believe that protecting certain plants and animal species is more urgent because their extinction will upset the whole ecosystem and it would be huge loss .

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal position. However, the development of ideas is somewhat uneven. While the argument for biodiversity is supported with examples like coral reefs and predators, the discussion of 'other environmental problems' is limited to a brief mention of climate change. The essay would benefit from a more balanced exploration of why others might consider climate change or pollution to be more pressing. The position is consistent, but the depth of analysis regarding the counter-argument is slightly underdeveloped, preventing it from reaching the highest band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'On the other hand' and 'For example', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the use of punctuation is occasionally inconsistent, such as the sentence fragment 'Which tear our homes down...' and the lack of proper capitalization after some full stops. The progression of ideas is generally clear, but the flow could be improved by refining the linking between sentences to avoid a slightly choppy feel.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, with some relevant topic-specific terms like 'ecosystem', 'extinct', and 'infrastructure'. However, there are several spelling errors, such as 'enviromental' (repeatedly), 'sinle', and 'exitinct'. Additionally, some word choices are slightly imprecise, such as 'reproduce in large figures' instead of 'numbers' or 'populations'. While the range is sufficient to convey the intended meaning, the frequency of spelling mistakes and the lack of more sophisticated collocations limit the score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('if primary predators... would not exist'), punctuation errors (missing commas, incorrect sentence fragments), and capitalization issues ('i' instead of 'I'). While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. The control over complex structures is inconsistent, and the punctuation needs more attention to ensure clarity.
