IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In todays world environmental problems are increasing day by day such as environmental pollution, extinction of animals, environmental diseases etc. The loss of living species are called extinction. Because with time living things loses thier lives due to environmental changes like global warming and climate change. According to me loss of species is one of the main problem. Because if the natural habitat will be destroyed than the world will go to its end.
There are many environmental problems that people says important, but we can survive with that problems by facing and challenging them. However if species extinction will start then the food chains of animals and the resources we get from other species such as wood, rubber, food will be finished and living things will not get their needs and cannot survive.
The people that says about other problems like diseases, pollutiuon, they are right in thier opinion but reality is that e.g if a disease is spreading because of pollution then we can find its solution, do preventions and will
gain control but if plants and animals species start lossing than its become too much difficult to control them e.g the inudus dolphine are at risk of extinction due to the harmful chemicals that factories dump into the river indus. If they extinct then the habitat of indus river may destroyed. Best way to control it, is to avoid the contaminated and harmful chemicals from dumping into rivers and oceans.
In conclusion, loss of species is very major and serious environmental problem we have to control it. Other issues are also imporant but they can be handeled wisely.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention the importance of biodiversity, the discussion of 'other environmental problems' is quite brief and lacks depth. To improve, you should provide more specific examples or logical consequences for the alternative view (e.g., how climate change or pollution might be considered more urgent due to their immediate impact on human health). The conclusion is present but brief. Overall, the response meets the requirements of the task but remains at a basic level of argumentation.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the structure. However, the use of cohesive devices is often mechanical or repetitive (e.g., 'Because', 'However', 'In conclusion'). There are instances where the logical flow is slightly hindered by awkward phrasing, such as the transition between the second and third paragraphs. Referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when using 'that' or 'them' to refer back to previous ideas. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks the precision and range expected at higher levels. There are several spelling errors (e.g., 'todays', 'thier', 'pollutiuon', 'lossing', 'inudus', 'dolphine', 'handeled') and some awkward collocations (e.g., 'environmental diseases', 'world will go to its end'). While you successfully use topic-specific terms like 'extinction', 'habitat', and 'food chains', the overall control of vocabulary is inconsistent. Focusing on accurate spelling and learning more sophisticated synonyms for common words will help improve your score in this criterion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the loss of living species are', 'people says', 'habitat... may destroyed') and incorrect article usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences and missing commas. While the meaning is generally clear, the high frequency of errors in basic grammar prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. You should focus on proofreading your work to correct subject-verb agreement and verb tense consistency.
