Student answer (Band 6.0)

Few individual claim that the loss of a particular plants and animals is the main environmental problem in recent times. While some believe that there are other more crucial environmental problems. In my opinion, loss of a particular species of plants and animals can have a huge effect on our ecosystem but other environmental problems should not be overlooked.

On the one hand, the loss of plants and animals can negatively affect our environment. The biodiversity of our ecosystem is at the suffering end when there is a reduction in the population of plants and animal. Most plants and animals shear a symbiotic relationship where they both benefit from each other, the reduction in their population can directly or indirectly affect both of them. Additionally, the extinction of some of those plants and animals are inevitable, since the chance of cross pollination or reproduction rate will decline attributing to the reduction in population of plants and animals. Furthermore, plants and animals serve as source of food for humans. The loss of those plants and animals can result to starvation and lack of food for human.

On the other hand, there are several other important environmental problems in recent times. Most importantly the way wastes are disposed can impose a risk to the environment, it can lead to water contaminations, environmental pollution and the spread of deadly infections around the globe. Furthermore, other disastrous things like earth quake, floods are so dangerous to the environment, since it can render our farm land useless and can even lead to mortality of both plants and animals.

In conclusion, the loss of plants and animals can be a problem to our environment, but other environmental disasters should not be overlooked.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the argument regarding waste disposal is mentioned but lacks specific examples or a deeper explanation of why it is considered a more pressing issue than biodiversity loss. The points made are relevant, but they remain at a general level. To reach a higher band, you should aim to expand your supporting arguments with more detailed explanations or concrete examples, ensuring that the comparison between the two viewpoints is more balanced and thoroughly explored.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the two viewpoints. Cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand,' 'On the other hand,' and 'Furthermore' are used to guide the reader. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the connection between the symbiotic relationship of plants and animals and the subsequent claim about cross-pollination is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between ideas would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, allowing the message to be conveyed clearly. There are some attempts at using topic-specific vocabulary like 'biodiversity,' 'symbiotic relationship,' and 'cross-pollination.' However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'at the suffering end' and 'mortality of both plants and animals,' which sound unnatural. To improve, focus on learning collocations—words that naturally go together—and try to incorporate a wider range of precise, academic vocabulary to express your ideas more effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a particular plants') and pluralization ('Few individual claim'). There are also issues with preposition usage and verb agreement, such as 'result to starvation' instead of 'result in.' While these errors do not significantly impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles, and try to proofread your work to catch these minor but persistent errors.
