Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Environmental issues has always been present all over the years and debate has been widely spread across the global society; whether, the current issue is the extinction of various species of plants and animals or it is said that, there are much bigger environmental problems. In this essay, I will discuss both of these point of view and I would give my own opinion at the end.

Extinction of plants and animals species have rose significantly over the past and it did cause an environmental impact to our ecosystem. For instance, the extinction of plant species can destroy food sources and habitats for other organisms while reducing the ability of ecosystems to absorb carbon dioxide. This could ultimately result in a decline of biodiversity.

Meanwhile, bigger and important environmental problems such as climate change or global warming, pollution, and deforestation also posed a risk to our ecosystem and human lives. For instance, the latest incident in Nepal-China border; flash flood or mudslide has occurred due to a glacier ice that has melted as a result of global warming. This phenomena has taken not hundreds but thousand of human lives.

Currently, the main environmental issue is the climate change or global warming. In my opinion, this has resulted to human hazard activities including but not limited to developing industrial factories contributing air and water pollution, deforestation, and plastic or waste pollution which all contributed to climate change. Ultimately, resulting to the decline of biodiversity, ecosystem disruption, and harm to humans and wildlife.

To conclude, all environmental problems could ultimately harm our planet. Sustainable environmental solutions and preventative measures should be implemented to protect our home.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all parts of the prompt by discussing both views and providing a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as the mention of biodiversity loss and climate change. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, while you mention the Nepal-China border incident, the link between this specific event and the broader argument about 'more important' environmental problems could be more explicitly articulated. Your position is clear throughout, but the essay would benefit from more depth in the analysis of why climate change is considered a more pressing issue compared to species extinction, rather than just listing them as contributors to the same problem.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, each with a distinct focus. You use cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Meanwhile', and 'To conclude' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the opening sentence is quite long and contains some awkward punctuation, which slightly disrupts the initial flow. Referencing is generally clear, but there are instances where the connection between ideas could be tightened to ensure a more seamless progression of thought.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'biodiversity', 'ecosystem disruption', and 'preventative measures'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you use 'human hazard activities' instead of 'harmful human activities' and 'have rose' instead of 'have risen'. While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band. Expanding your range to include more sophisticated synonyms would also be beneficial.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with subject-verb agreement (e.g., 'Environmental issues has always been') and verb forms (e.g., 'have rose'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, specifically the misuse of semicolons and commas in the introduction. While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors in basic grammar and sentence construction prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on proofreading for subject-verb agreement and correct tense usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
