IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Environmental issues are major concern. Some people believe the cause behind that problem is the loss of specific species of plants and animals, while some critics says rather than this, there are other crucial problem. In this paragraph, I will discuss both views & also I will give my opinion.

Loss of biodiversity can be the major reason of the degradation of environment because it interrupts food chain, & every plant and animal requires food to eat, without food they could not survive and for this they are depend upon on other animals and plants but if the species will be eradicated they have nothing to eat which eventually disturb the ecosystem. For example, plant need pollinators to do pollination but if the particular species which helps them in pollination got extinct, this will directly lead to extinction of the plant. Similarly with animals. However, the environmental problem such as global warming is also a big concern. As when temperature is upward the glaciers start to melt which results more water in the ocean which causes floods and tsunami.

In my opinion, there are not a single one or two factors contributing in environmental damage, there are multiple factors such pollution, green house effects, and the major factor is that people are still not concern about the environmental problem. So it might be better, if we considered every problem as crucial and we should introduce measures about it.

To conclude, plants and animals extinction is a major problem as it creates interruption in food cycle which leads to damage of whole ecological system. Meanwhile other contributing factor is global warming, as it results in floods and tsunami.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both views and provides a clear personal opinion. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While the explanation of the food chain is relevant, the discussion of global warming is brief and lacks depth. The conclusion repeats points already made rather than synthesising them effectively. To reach a higher band, you should expand on your arguments with more specific examples or logical consequences. For instance, when discussing global warming, you could explain how it specifically impacts human habitats or economic stability, rather than just mentioning floods and tsunamis. The position is clear, but the overall development of the argument remains basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the flow between ideas is sometimes mechanical. You use basic cohesive devices like 'Similarly' and 'However', but the transition between the discussion of biodiversity and global warming feels abrupt. The use of '&' instead of 'and' is informal and inappropriate for an academic task. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the sentence 'for this they are depend upon on other animals', where the pronoun reference is slightly confusing. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring a smoother progression between sentences would enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and variety required for higher bands. You rely on repetitive phrasing, such as 'major problem' and 'environmental problem'. There are also some collocation errors, such as 'temperature is upward' instead of 'temperatures are rising' and 'not concern about' instead of 'not concerned about'. To improve, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to environmental science, such as 'ecosystem collapse', 'mitigation strategies', or 'anthropogenic factors'. Avoiding informal symbols like '&' and focusing on accurate word forms will help you achieve a higher score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the flow. For example, 'some critics says' (subject-verb agreement), 'they are depend upon on' (incorrect verb form and preposition usage), and 'there are not a single one' (plural/singular agreement). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some run-on sentences. While the meaning is generally clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and consistent verb tense usage will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
