IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Some people say that the main environmental problem of our time is the loss of particular species of plants and animals. Others say that there are more important environmental problems. Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The give topic brings up the question of environmental problems and its reasons, while there many more environmental that still go unnoticed.

Loss of a certain specie of plant or an animal can have cause damage to the environment because every living being on earth serves a specific in an ecosystem by the extinction of one specie can disrupt the balance of a society, every living being is a part of a wheel for example: insects depends on vegetation, However, others believe that there are even more pressing environmental issues than the extinction of individual species. Climate change, for instance, affects the entire planet by causing extreme weather conditions, rising sea levels and changes in agricultural production. Similarly, pollution of air and water directly threatens human health and destroys natural habitats. These problems can also contribute to the extinction of numerous species, meaning that addressing their root causes may be more effective than focusing on individual endangered animals or plants.

In my opinion, although the loss of biodiversity is undoubtedly a serious concern, broader environmental problems such as climate change and pollution deserve greater attention. This is because they affect not only particular species but entire ecosystems and human populations as well. For example, global warming causes habitat destruction, which subsequently puts many plants and animals at risk of extinction.

In conclusion, the disappearance of particular species can seriously disturb ecosystems and should not be ignored. Nevertheless, I believe that wider issues, especially climate change and pollution, are more urgent because of their extensive impact on the planet and because solving them could also help protect endangered species.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses both sides of the argument and provides a clear personal opinion. The ideas are relevant, such as linking biodiversity loss to ecosystem disruption and contrasting this with the systemic nature of climate change. However, the development is somewhat limited. For instance, the explanation of how insects depend on vegetation is cut off mid-sentence, and the argument could benefit from more specific examples or deeper analysis of why one problem is 'more important' than the other. The position is consistent, but the depth of exploration is slightly restricted, placing it firmly in the Band 6 range.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is logically organized into clear paragraphs, with an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'However,' 'Similarly,' and 'In conclusion,' which help guide the reader. However, there are some issues with sentence-level cohesion; for example, the first sentence is grammatically fragmented and lacks a clear connection to the rest of the paragraph. Additionally, the transition between the idea of 'insects' and the shift to 'climate change' is abrupt. While the overall progression is coherent, the mechanical nature of some transitions and occasional awkward phrasing prevent a higher score.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use relevant terms like 'biodiversity,' 'ecosystem,' 'extinction,' and 'habitat destruction.' There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'The give topic' (should be 'The given topic') and 'every living being serves a specific in an ecosystem' (missing a noun like 'role'). While you attempt to use topic-specific vocabulary, the range is somewhat limited, and there are occasional errors in word choice that slightly hinder the flow. To reach a higher band, focus on using more precise collocations and ensuring word forms are correct.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The essay contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'while there many more environmental that still go unnoticed' (missing a verb and a noun) and 'by the extinction of one specie can disrupt' (incorrect prepositional usage). Punctuation is generally functional, but the sentence structure in the first paragraph is particularly weak. While the meaning is usually clear, the frequency of these errors prevents the essay from reaching the Band 7 level, where a higher frequency of error-free sentences is required.
